Novell Achieves NetWare 5 Delivery Milestones
NetWare 5 Enters Beta 2 Testing; Netscape FastTrack Server Available with Novell
intraNetWare and NetWare
PROVO, Utah -- January 27, 1998 -- Novell®, Inc. today further
cemented its
leadership as an Internet company delivering next-generation networking technology by
announcing the
delivery of NetWare® 5 beta 2 and the availability of the Netscape FastTrack Server for
NetWare
to intraNetWare and NetWare 4.11 customers. These announcements advance Novell's
server
operating system as the networking foundation for companies that increasingly leverage Internet
technologies and open standards to improve productivity and efficiency.
The delivery of NetWare 5 beta 2 represents a significant milestone in its development. With this
beta,
Novell has added new features that provide customers with full compatibility between NetWare
5's
TCP/IP and existing IPX networks. Novell has also enhanced the features from the first beta to
provide
customers with easier manageability and improved performance.
NetWare 5 includes Netscape FastTrack Server for NetWare and Netscape Communicator,
enabling
Novell customers to deploy leading Web publishing solutions on the industry's leading
networking
platform. In addition, Netscape FastTrack Server for NetWare and Netscape Communicator are
now
available for free to all Novell intraNetWare , NetWare 4.11 and intraNetWare for Small
Business customers.
For organizations that rely on Internet and intranet solutions for mission critical applications and
information management, both Novell and Netscape offer Netscape Enterprise Server for
NetWare--a
high-performance Web and application server with JavaScript support, connectivity to Oracle
databases,
an Internet standards-based message server and Novell Directory Services (NDS)
and
LDAP support for directory-based management.
"These announcements confirm that Novell is on track to deliver a leading server operating
system to its
customers in mid-1998," said John Slitz, Novell senior vice president of marketing. "The
integration of
Netscape FastTrack Server for NetWare and Netscape Communicator combine with Novell
NetWare to
provide our 77 million customers access to the tools they need to work more effectively using
Internet-
based technologies. This second beta of NetWare 5 provides a solid look at the new solutions
that make it
easy for organizations to standardize on IP and more efficiently leverage the power of Internet
technology."
NetWare 5 Beta 2 Simplifies Migration to IP
NetWare 5 Beta 2 includes new features to ease customer transitions to IP-based networks and
simplify
the installation process. New features for this second beta include:
- Migration Gateway -- provides a gateway that transparently bridges the IP network segments
with
existing NetWare IPX network segments.
- Compatibility Mode -- enables customers to run IPX applications even after they have fully
migrated
to IP.
- New Backup Utility -- allows network administrators to use NDS for flexible scheduling and
management of system backup across the entire network.
- Java GUI Install -- brings the simplicity of a graphical user interface (GUI) to the NetWare
installation process for the first time.
The Migration Gateway and Compatibility Mode will be two of the most important features for
users
looking to move their networks to IP as a single protocol. These features provide customers with
a safe,
reliable and easy way to introduce the co-existence of IP and IPX. They also allow customers to
continue
using IPX in their networks if they prefer.
In addition, Novell has strengthened many of the features that were included in the first beta of
NetWare
5. Most notable of these refinements are the DNS/DHCP services. These services leverage NDS
to ease
and automate IP address management.
Education and Developer Services Laying Foundation for NetWare 5
Novell Education will provide product education courses for network administrators on new
NetWare
capabilities and services prior to the mid-year ship date. Through this effort, thousands of
Certified
Novell Engineers will be ready to support NetWare 5 the day it ships. NetWare 5 education
courses will
be available at over 1,450 Novell Authorized Education Centers worldwide.
Novell's DeveloperNet has been working closely with key development partners since the initial
beta
release of NetWare 5 and reports hundreds of applications are currently under development and
scheduled for certification and release concurrent with the NetWare 5 product later this year.
Novell is
providing extensive developer and certification support for developers who will have products
ready to
ship with NetWare 5. Other developers who are building NetWare 5 applications and are
interested in
working closely with Novell in the development and certification of their products can send
E-mail to
Novell at: devsup@novell.com.
