Uruguay Government Selects Novell Software to Provide Internet, Groupware Connectivity to 700,000 Secondary Students

Provo, Utah — February 27, 1998 — Novell, Inc. today announced that the Uruguay Public Education Bureau has selected Novell's networking software to provide Internet and groupware connectivity for more than 700,000 secondary students at 450 schools. The country-wide networking project includes the purchase of a 5,000-user licenses for the Novell BorderManager family of network services and ManageWise network management solution, as well as 100 licenses for Novell's new NDS for NT software selected to integrate and manage Microsoft SQL database applications running on NT Server.

The network expansion also includes Novell's BorderManager FastCache used to accelerate Internet performance, Novell Replication Services used to update multiple servers across the network, and 100 new intraNetWare network solution platforms. The new servers add to a total of 450 Novell network solutions platforms used in the Uruguay Education system for e-mail and collaboration, manageability, Internet services, and application deployment.

"Our main objective is to assure quality public education," said Jose Luis Sanchez, technology director for the Uruguay Public Education Bureau. "We need to minimize management costs in information networks that are reliable and secure. Novell's solutions have never failed us in meeting those requirements."

Using Novell Directory Services (NDS), the Uruguay Education IT staff from a single location and login can centrally manage and control network-wide access to GroupWise e-mail and document management software, a Microsoft SQL database running on NT Server, an internal intranet, and the global Internet. Novell's ManageWise 2.5 includes the Novell Application Launcher (NAL), allowing the staff to use NDS to automatically distribute software and manage user access to applications across the network. ManageWise also provides the schools with the ability to remotely monitor and troubleshoot problems across the network.

NDS is also integrated with Novell's BorderManager, a set of network services that allow the IT staff to centrally manage the border between school local-area-networks and between the larger school network and the Internet. The schools are using NDS to manage Internet security and access privileges, while taking advantage of BorderManager's virtual private networking (VPN) capabilities to facilitate secure connection between schools over the Internet and avoid costs for dedicated phone lines and wide-area networking services. Novell's FastCache, a product in the BorderManager family, accelerates Internet performance to keep students on task and make the Internet practical as an instructional tool over the 64 Kbps connections at each school.
