Novell Adds FDDI to ManageWise for More Comprehensive Problem Detection, Repair and
Prevention for Networks
Novell Offers Customers Integrated Standards-Based FDDI Network Analysis
PROVO, Utah March 9, 1998 Novell today announced the availability of
Fiber
Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) network analysis and enhanced protocol support for
ManageWise, the industry-leading PC network management solution. The ManageWise
FDDI
network analysis is compliant with the industry standard for Remote Monitoring (RMON) and is
based on
Novell's market-leading LANalyzer network analysis technology. With this new capability,
ManageWise speeds network problem resolution and reduces downtime for FDDI networks.
By adding FDDI support to this network management software solution, Novell now provides the
broadest
range of choice in LAN standards. In addition to FDDI, ManageWise also supports Ethernet and
Token-
Ring networks. FDDI is a 100Mbps network standard that provides a stable, reliable and
fault-tolerant
network backbone.
"FDDI support for LANalyzer is great news for us because many of our customers' networks
have FDDI
back bones," said Bill Towey, president of Powerscourt, LLC. "As a management service
provider we use
ManageWise to manage our customers' networks remotely and FDDI support adds significant
value for
those customers who use ManageWise to maximize their network investment."
ManageWise helps administrators maintain network availability by minimizing or avoiding
network
downtime, thereby increasing the total value of the network and increasing user productivity.
ManageWise
FDDI analysis reduces network ownership costs by automatically providing the information
administrators
need through the ManageWise console so they can troubleshoot and fine-tune FDDI networks.
ManageWise also provides valuable documentation through extensive automated reporting
capabilities
generating network performance and health trend reports in HTML format for publishing on the
Web.
By automatically detecting existing and potential network problems, ManageWise provides
SNMP alarms
immediately to network managers, allowing many network problems to be avoided. The
LANalyzer
network dashboard shows administrators network health at a glance and lets them simply point
and click to
capture and decode network packets to conduct more in-depth diagnostic investigations. The
LANalyzer
analysis functionality is a seamlessly integrated part of ManageWise so customers will find it a
natural,
intuitive part of troubleshooting their PC network environments.
"By bringing ManageWise functionality to FDDI networks, we are allowing customers to tune
and manage
their entire network from backbones and routers to servers and PCs," said Michael Simpson,
director of
marketing at Novell. "Quickly isolating problems with easy and intelligent interfaces is what
ManageWise
does best and it is critical to maximizing the productivity of employees."
The network analysis component of ManageWise is a combination of RMON agents that reside
on each
NetWare® server and the ManageWise Console user interface. ManageWise, with
LANalyzer,
supports the leading protocols including TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, AppleTalk and SNA. Important new
protocols,
such as DHCP, SMTP and BOOTP, have been added in this release.
