Novell Signs Two New Internet Services Partnerships with International Telcos
Canada's Maritime Telegraph& Telephone and Singapore Telecom to Deploy Novell's
Directory-Enabled Networking Solutions in Value-Added Internet Services
PROVO, Utah -- April 20, 1998 -- Novell, Inc. (NASDAQ:NOVL) today
announced two new partnerships with international telecommunications carriers to launch innovative
Internet services enabled by Novell's directory service (NDS) and related Novell networking solutions.
Canada's Maritime Telegraph and Telephone (MT&T) this month completed pilot testing and launched
Mpowered PC, a first-of-its-kind online service that uses Novell directory technology to give home and
business PC users access on demand to a virtual software library of educational, entertainment, and
productivity titles. In addition, Singapore Telecom (SingTel) launched ConnectPlus, a suite of network
services for business that makes extensive use of Novell software.
The new partnerships signal growth in the telecommunications and Internet Services Provider (ISP)
marketplace for Novell, whose industry-leading NDS gives carriers and ISPs unique capabilities for
structuring and managing value-added services. NDS is already widely deployed in business networks
and the business-class Internet services of such international carriers as American Telephone and
Telegraph (AT&T), Deutsche Telekom, and Japan's Nippon Telegraph and Telephone
(NTT).
"These latest partnerships are signposts in Novell's progress toward leadership in Internet software and
solutions for ISPs," said Ron Palmeri, Novell vice president for strategic relations. "Novell's intelligent
network server platform, crowned by NDS, enables ISPs to launch entirely new categories of services
and applications. Our partners at MT&T and SingTel make dramatic examples of what directory-enabled
network services can accomplish in the telco and ISP space."
MT&T's Mpowered PC
Mpowered PC offers MT&T customers a library of educational, productivity and entertainment software
on demand. Users can "rent" software hourly, weekly, or yearly, depending on their needs. A customized
billing interface, built with the directory-enabled Novell Application Launcher (NAL) allows parents to
monitor usage and set spending limits, as well as limit access to specific applications and games. NAL
and additional desktop management and software distribution functionality will be available in the first
half of 1998 in Novell's Z.E.N.works product.
Customers access the service over high-speed Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connections. Additional
software used in the MT&T solution includes NDS for centralized user authentication and management,
Novell's BorderManager family of Internet security and performance acceleration services, NetWare
intelligent network server platforms, and a compatible Oracle database.
GE Capital TMS, a leading systems integrator, and Novell's Enterprise Consulting Group worked closely
with MT&T to develop Mpowered PC's software infrastructure. Novell will continue to support and work
with MT&T in further developing the Mpowered platform, now available in Atlantic Canada, and in
extending the solution to additional markets. "We're delighted to be partnered with an industry leader
who will continue to grow with us and share our vision in changing the way people connect," said Colin
Latham, MT&T President and CEO.
SingTel's ConnectPlus
ConnectPlus uses directory-enabled Novell software to support a wide spectrum of business-class
network services, including remote access to local-area networks (LANs), hosted groupware and e-mail,
network management services, secure Internet access, and Web-site hosting. In addition to NetWare,
NDS, and BorderManager, the service makes use of Novell's ManageWise network management solution
for remote network management.
Using ConnectPlus, businesses of all kinds and sizes can outsource the complexity and some of the costs
related to maintaining intranet, extranet, and Internet connections, both internally and over secure,
managed links with customers, partners, and suppliers. Singtel estimates savings up to 40 percent for
businesses taking advantage of ConnectPlus services.
Evolving the Novell Channel for Internet Services
In addition to its partnerships with telecommunications carriers, Novell is increasingly meeting the
network platform and services needs of ISPs. For the thousands of resellers and solutions providers who
comprise the Novell channel, Novell's growing leadership in intranet and Internet software presents new
opportunities to diversify their businesses into Internet services. To speed that process, Novell this spring
introduced Novell Internet Enhanced Service Provider (Novell Internet ESP), a new program that allows
Novell channel partners and ISPs to license Novell's GroupWise e-mail and collaboration solution,
BorderManager and ManageWise products for use in Internet standards. Novell plans to expand the
program throughout 1998, adding products to a portfolio of network solutions that can be licensed and
distributed as part of Internet services.
