Novell Selects POET Technology for Development of Java Networking Products
Las Vegas, NV -- May 5, 1998 -- Novell, Inc. and POET Software today announced
a wide-reaching partnership. Novell has signed an unlimited licensing deal for the POET object database,
for use as a common repository. Novell is investigating potential usage across a wide range of products.
Novell is incorporating POET technology in the new Java-based Common Install feature of Novell's
forthcoming NetWare server platform. In addition, Novell will use the POET technology in other Java
development projects that will give Novell customers new capabilities for storing, managing and
retrieving object-oriented data in a variety of formats.
After completing extensive technical analysis of available object database technologies on the market,
Novell selected POET. Novell based its decision on many factors including compliance with the Object
Database Management Group (ODMG) standard, POET's implementation of Java language bindings,
performance, scalability, functionality, footprint and cross-platform support.
"Novell is creating the industry's leading platform for network services and middle-tier computing." said
Glenn Ricart, Chief Technology Office of Novell. "The POET Object Server technology is a perfect
match with our increased emphasis on Java development projects, offering excellent integration with the
NetWare operating system and our server-based Java computing environment. We are very pleased with
POET's Java support, which enables transparent persistence for Java applications we expect to leverage
this functionality in an increasing number of projects. Our endorsement of POET in our own
development projects underscores the value and opportunity available to all developers who will benefit
from POET's excellent NetWare integration."
"We are very excited about our expanded relationship with Novell," said Dirk Bartels, President and
CEO of POET Software. "Working closely with Novell, POET has been able to develop technology
which will serve an increasing role in a number of Novell products. Novell's commitment to using POET
in conjunction with its server-based Java development evidences the strength of Java transparent
persistence for application developers based on the ODMG industry-standard. We are delighted that our
work with Novell has created a strong product both for Novell's own needs, but will also benefit a
growing number of Java developers on the NetWare platform."
The POET Object Server language bindings enable developers to store C++ and Java application objects
transparently, in their most appropriate native form. This functionality eliminates the need for
cumbersome relational-object mappings in new object-oriented applications. According to analysts at
Meta Group, the code required to map objects into relational databases often accounts for 60 percent of
the typical application's code. As a result, leveraging an object database for object-oriented development
can reduce source code and development time by 60 percent.
In addition to licensing the POET Object Server, Novell licensed POET's SQL Object Factory. The
POET SQL Object Factory automatically maps application objects into SQL, providing seamless storage
of objects in relational databases including Oracle, DB/2, Microsoft SQL Server, and others. This
provides an ideal complement for integrating Novell's Java technologies, the new SQL Integrator
product, and the Oracle relational database on NetWare.
