Novell Answers Customer Demand for High Data Availability Solutions on the Network

Orion Phase I and StandbyServer Many-to-One Dramatically Reduce the Risk and Cost of Network Failure in Businesses of All Sizes

PROVO, Utah -- May 5, 1998 -- Novell, Inc. today strengthened its foothold in the clustering arena, announcing availability of two new solutions that ensure reliable access to network data and minimize network downtime. The company will ship Orion Phase I at the end of June and StandbyServer Many-to-One for NetWare® in late May to meet customer demand for solutions that protect mission-critical network data in the event of hardware and software failures. The new clustering solutions enhance the network reliability that has always been a hallmark of Novell networks, adding to the wave of new solutions arriving in the marketplace for Novell's intelligent network server platform.

For many companies, even an hour of network downtime means millions of dollars lost. Given this significant risk, Novell is meeting the needs of a range of organizations for secure, reliable access to data and applications on the network, 24 hours a day. The breadth of clustering-related product offerings now available from Novell ensures that small customers, as well as larger corporations, can implement reliable, high-availability solutions appropriate for their respective budgets and business environments.

"Clustering cannot be delivered as a 'one-size-fits-all' solution if it is going to truly meet the needs of our customers," said Michael Bryant, director of marketing for advanced services. "Novell's strategy is to let users choose: they can use existing hardware or purchase additional shared storage, use a separate standby server or employ active servers as their primary safeguard. Whatever a customer's needs may be in terms of high data availability, Novell is prepared to deliver a cost-effective, customized solution."

A Foundation for Clustering

Orion, the code name for Novell's line of clustering products, will be offered in stages to meet the needs of customers today and allow them to grow their clustering solutions in the future. Orion Phase I offers high-availability for two nodes, or active network servers, and the following customer benefits:

  • Automatic failover protection -- In the event of hardware or software failure on one server, the remaining server seamlessly takes over without requiring users to log in again, guaranteeing a network environment that is available anytime, anywhere.
  • Active servers -- Orion Phase I supports two active NetWare 4.11 servers, instead of a separate inactive server for back-up protection. This ensures efficient use of servers on the network and reduces overall technology costs.
  • Shared storage -- Orion's support for shared storage devices allows customers to reduce overall management costs by centralizing administration and data back-up. Shared storage also ensures efficient use of storage space by eliminating the need to maintain duplicate files on different servers. The hardware investment for Orion Phase I can be used as a building block as customers evolve their clustering solutions to include more advanced capabilities in the future.

StandbyServer Many-to-One Protects Multiple Servers

Novell is also offering StandbyServer Many-to-One, a hardware-independent solution that increases network reliability by allowing a single server to protect multiple mission-critical servers from failures. Customers reduce significant hardware costs with this solution by eliminating the need for a one-to-one correlation of primary and backup servers. Data from the primary machines is mirrored in real-time to the standby machine, so that if the system goes down, all data will have been preserved on the now- functioning backup server. This technology will appeal to users of Novell's StandbyServer and those who are not using shared storage. StandbyServer Many-to-One includes Novell's SnapShotServer, a technology that speeds and automates tape backups without hindering the performance of the primary server. SnapShotServer is the first technology from Novell that enables back-up of live databases and open files.

"Novell has offered high availability solutions to its customers for quite some time," said Dan Kusnetzky, Director of Operating Environments and Serverware research for International Data Corporation. "Many major organizations use these solutions as an important part of their basic computing infrastructure. Novell clearly has listened to these customers and has extended the capabilities of its software. Novell is now offering a flexible, manageable, and powerful clustering solution for organizations of all sizes."

Clustering Roadmap

Novell will continue to provide new and enhanced high-availability products for small-, medium- and enterprise-size customers looking for affordable protection of network resources. These most recent offerings will round-out Novell's growing family of high-availability products, which currently includes Novell Replication Services™, SFT™ III (fault tolerance) and Novell's StandbyServer. Orion will initially be supported by NetWare 4.11 and intraNetWare™. Orion Phase II, which will ship in the fourth quarter of 1998, will include support for multiple nodes and will be supported by NetWare 4.11 and 5.0. StandbyServer and StandbyServer Many-to-One are currently supported by NetWare 3.x and 4.x and will be supported by NetWare 5.0 shortly after its mid-year availability. Novell will continue to support customers using SFT III for NetWare 4.11.

Pricing and Availability

Orion Phase I, with support for two servers, will be generally available at the end of June and can be purchased through Novell Authorized Resellers. Pricing details will be announced at that time. Novell's StandbyServer Many-to-One, a multi-node version of the currently shipping StandbyServer product, will be available late-May for $6,999 and will include Novell's SnapShotServer. SnapShotServer will also be sold as a stand-alone product for $999 through established reseller channels.
