Novell Supports I2O Specification in NetWare 4.11 and NetWare 5
New Architecture Improves Server Performance and Simplifies Overall Network
Management
Novell, Inc. today announced availability of I2O solutions for NetWare 4.11 and NetWare
5, easing server management and increasing application processing efficiency. I2O is an
industry-driven software specification designed to provide a standards-based solution to offload
input/output traffic from the central processing unit and allow hardware vendors to develop a single
driver to work with all networking platforms. Novell is providing I2O support for Ethernet-
and SCSI-class devices and block storage in NetWare 4.11 and 5, which represents the most complete
operating system implementation of I2O available to date.
Novell's early leadership in the I2O arena shows a clear commitment to helping customers
run their businesses more efficiently by providing intelligent networking solutions that improve overall
network performance. As an active member the I2O SIG, Novell is working with several
key hardware partners, including Adaptec, Compaq, Distributed Processing Technologies (DPT),
Hewlett-Packard, Intel and Symbios Logic, to deliver I2O support on NetWare today.
The free I2O driver kit for NetWare 4.11 is available immediately at support.novell.com. Using the file finder function,
customers should download the I2ODRV1.exe file to receive the software. I2O
support is also included in NetWare 5 beta 3 for testing and will ship as part of NetWare 5 mid-year
1998. Customers interested in testing I2O functionality in NetWare 5 beta 3 can obtain a
test copy of NetWare 5 at http://www.novell.com/netware5.
