Novell Renews Its Commitment to Utah

City Officials Join Networking Leader to Celebrate Ground Breaking for Largest Office Building in Provo

PROVO, Utah — June 1, 1998 — Novell, Inc. and Dr. Eric Schmidt, chairman and CEO, today welcomes Provo Mayor Lewis K. Billings, Orem Mayor Joe Nelson and other dignitaries to celebrate its renewed commitment to Utah and to break ground on a new, state-of-the-art facility that nearly doubles the size of the networking leader's Provo, Utah headquarters.

The 388,000 square foot building H will be Novell's seventh on its Provo campus. Located at 122 East 1700 South in Provo, the building has convenient access to the University exit on I-15, providing Novell's employees with an accessible workplace at the heart of Provo's East Bay industrial park. Expected to be complete by January, 2000, approximately 1,000 employees will use office and laboratory space in the eight-story granite, limestone and glass building. Exterior amenities will include basketball and volleyball courts, open grass play area and extensive landscaping including 350 new trees.

"As we begin construction on this beautiful new building, Novell reaffirms that we are in Utah to stay," said Dr. Eric Schmidt, Novell chairman and CEO. "We are a global company with two anchors: one in Utah and one in San Jose, California. In both places, we are building for the future based on a high quality of life, world-class technical talent, and a favorable business climate. Our customers, partners, and employees will continue to enjoy the best of both places."

The new building will allow Novell to consolidate Utah operations which are currently split between Novell's Orem and Provo campuses. Ample room will exist in the new campus for the approximately 1,400 people who work for Novell in Orem today, as well as for significant growth in business and the employee base. In the event of even greater growth, the company has prepared provisional plans for phased expansion on the site.

Consolidation of the Utah workforce parallels a similar move in Silicon Valley, where Novell is nearing completion of an entirely new campus. Employees there will move from operations currently taking place in seven buildings leased and three owned by the company in the Fortune Drive area of San Jose to the new campus.

"Consolidation in Provo and San Jose makes good business sense for Novell as we continue to improve efficiency, communication, and teamwork throughout our business," said Dr. Schmidt. "Our new facilities in Utah and Silicon Valley help us reduce operational overhead over the long range. In addition, we are creating superb work environments that are designed to attract the world's top networking talent."

Designed by MHTN architects and built by Okland Construction of Salt Lake, the building will use more than 25 miles of fiber optics for site communications and more than 500 miles of level-six station cable for desktops and labs. Enough concrete will be used to build a four-foot-wide sidewalk more than 61 miles long. The building will be powered by six megawatts of electricity which is enough to power two Delta Centers, or six subdivisions of 150 homes.
