Four Million Enterprise Users Rely On Novell for Internet Caching

Novell BorderManager FastCache Technology Gains Momentum As Leading Cache Solution

Provo, UT — June 15, 1998 — Internet software leader Novell Inc., today announced that over four million enterprise and ISP customers now depend on its BorderManager FastCache™ technology to speed user access to popular Web information, reduce network bandwidth requirements, and accelerate any web site. This announcement comes on the heels of Internet caching partnerships Novell has announced with IBM and Digi International, and with Compaq and Pinacor, to provide the industry's fastest and most scalable Internet caching solution for Web-enabled businesses and Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

"Novell has delivered a caching solution that directly addresses the needs of enterprise and ISP customers who are extending their business to the Internet," stated John Katsaros, president of Collaborative Research, publishers of the 1998 Internet Caching Report. "Our research indicates that easy administration along with faster Internet page response time and bandwidth savings are the top three requirements for caching solutions. With BorderManager and BorderManager FastCache, Novell specifically addresses these customer requirements."

Novell's software caching solution, with 75 percent cache hit rates, is designed to meet the requirements of any company that extends their business to the Internet, intranets and the World Wide Web. Customers can configure the solution at the border of any UNIX, NT, Macintosh or NetWare® network. By accelerating Internet performance, the solution can help make business employees more productive, enhance Internet-based education in schools, lower bandwidth costs, and provide a cost- effective alternative to upgrading overburdened web servers.

"Instead of expensive caching products that require additional cost intensive hardware, BorderManager FastCache is an innovative software answer to the need for scalable, high-speed Internet access," commented Chris Stone, senior vice president of strategy and business development, Novell Inc. "Novell is extending our leadership in enterprise networks to deliver best of breed Internet solutions such as caching."

EOS/SpringNet is using BorderManager FastCache technology to provide accelerated Internet access to more than 6000 customers in Illinois. "Novell is creating new business opportunities for Internet Service Providers," commented Anthony Hopp, Principle of EOS/Spring Net, Spingfield, IL. "As an ISP who is looking to deliver fast and reliable Internet services to our customers, we find Novell's BorderManager FastCache to be an ideal solution. Novell's caching solution delivers a cost effective package that we can extend to our customers in the form of superior performance."

Industry leading Proxy Cache Performance

BorderManager FastCache is an easily administered caching solution that includes proxy caching, hierarchical network caching and Web server acceleration services. As reported by the independent testing authority Mindcraft, Inc., (www.mindcraft.com) BorderManager FastCache processes 4,055 hits per second or 350 million hits per day. Unlike other proxy caches that require expensive hardware platforms and cache farms to scale the Internet, BorderManager FastCache delivers this phenomenal performance on a single Intel Pentium II processor. BorderManager FastCache increases the responsiveness and capacity of any NT, NetWare or Unix Web server. In fact, according to Mindcraft, BorderManager FastCache scales a Sun Unix Web server more than 700 percent. Compared to other industry solutions, Novell's caching technologies, starting at U.S.$995.00, represent a price/value performance advantage of ten to one.

Accelerating Web Servers

Novell, Inc. also owns the speed record for single-processor Web server performance measured by the industry-standard SPECweb96 benchmark. Results of the benchmark demonstrate that Novell network server platforms for hosting Web sites and running business intranets have emerged as industry leaders in both raw performance and price-performance value, enabling business customers and Internet Services Providers (ISPs) to serve more users more quickly and efficiently than significantly more expensive solutions based on UNIX and Microsoft Windows NT.

The record-breaking solution includes Novell's intraNetWare 4.11 operating system, BorderManager with the FastCache Web server accelerator, and Netscape Enterprise Server for NetWare running on a Compaq ProLiant 3000 with a single 300 MHZ Intel Pentium II processor. Novell's Intel processor-based SPECweb96 result of 1639 operations per second topped the performance of all single-processor Web servers submitted to date for SPECweb96 benchmarking, including leading UNIX and NT solutions based on the DEC Alpha, Hewlett-Packard PA-RISC, IBM PowerPC, SGI MIPS R10000, and Sun UltraSPARC architectures.

Momentum in the Industry

Novell has previously announced caching partnerships with Digi and IBM and also Compaq and Pinacor. The partnership with Digi International and IBM provides an integrated solution that speeds user access to popular Web information, reduces network bandwidth requirements, and accelerates any web site. The solution integrates Digi Datafire SYNC/570 adapters with IBM's Netfinity 325 server and Novell's BorderManager FastCache, the industry's fastest and most scalable Internet caching solution.

Novell and Pinacor, formerly known as MicroAge Distribution, are partnering to deliver an industry leading turnkey web acceleration solution for any company that extends their business to the Internet, intranets and the World Wide Web. Pinacor, the third largest distributor and leading provider of channel integration services, will combine Compaq's ProLiant Server family with Novell's BorderManager FastCache, for Web-enabled businesses and Internet Service Providers (ISPs).
