Making Novell GroupWise and Sage Timeslips Time& Billing Software Mobile
June 16, 1998 New York City, NY Psion Incorporated (PON.L) today
announced a complete customizable legal solution, enabling attorneys around the world to carry and
access important information while away from the office. Psion's mobile solution for lawyers includes:
Psion's award-winning Series 5 handheld computer (with up to 18MB of memory), LinkWise mobile
software for Novell GroupWise, Logit, a Timeslips-compatible application as well as an option to use an
innovative Internet transcription service called CyberTranscriber, developed by Speech Machines.
Combined, these technologies form an unparalleled turnkey solution for the legal community.
The main focus of Psion's legal solution is to make information residing on an attorney's desktop portable
and easily accessible. With the Psion Series 5, users have an advanced built-in suite of office applications
that integrate with all the popular desktop office products (Corel/WordPerfect, Microsoft Office and
Lotus SmartSuite). With the addition of two new mobile applications, Linkwise and Logit, attorneys gain
a mobile extension to Novell GroupWise documents and mail as well as Sage Timeslips time and billing
software. Psion's unique industrial design and patented laptop-style keyboard offers a true laptop
alternative that is fully compatible with Windows 95/NT work environments.
"Today's attorneys require constant access to information contained in briefs, transcripts, and other
documents regardless of whether they are in the office, at a client site, in court, or in between," according
to Mark Levitt, Esq., Research Manager at International Data Corporation (http://www.idc.com). "Psion's mobile solution is a pocket sized
computer device that can provide constant access to information from a variety of sources, which now
includes popular legal industry solutions Novell GroupWise and Sage Timeslips."
One of the tools that fuels Psion's mobile solution is from Advansys Corporation. Advansys develops
LinkWise, a plug-in for Psion's Series 5 connectivity software, PsiWin 2.1. It is a synchronization tool
enabling users to reconcile GroupWise appointments, contacts, notes and tasks with the Series 5
handheld computer. Additionally, by using Psion's POP3 e-mail client, users gain remote access to
GroupWise e-mail accounts, allowing them to check messages and reply at their convenience. LinkWise
is transparent to the GroupWise user, allowing them to initiate a Series 5 backup or synchronization
without leaving GroupWise.
"Novell has played an important role in the legal community for many years. GroupWise provides unique
solutions for legal customers by integrating e-mail, calendaring, document management and many other
functions. LinkWise allows mobile professionals to take full advantage of these solutions wherever they
are by bringing that functionality to the Psion Series 5. With the combination of Novell GroupWise and
the Psion Series 5, legal customers are never without the information they need, and can easily transfer
information gathered in the field to the system in their office, said Tom Rhoton, Director of Product
Marketing, Novell, Inc.
The second element of the Psion Mobile solution comes from Pelican Software, who has created a
Timeslips-compatible product called Logit. Pelican chose the Series 5 for its powerful, multi-tasking
operating system (EPOC), its ease-of-use and form factor. Logit effectively provides a mobile extension
to Timeslips, the leading time and billing software for lawyers. Logit can also export critical time and
billing information in ASCII formats for other legal office environments.
Matthew Lafata, director of strategic alliances for Sage US, adds, "The value proposition that the Psion
solution provides attorneys is more comprehensive than any other handheld solution on the market. It is
very important for those using Timeslips on the desktop to be as comfortable with a Timeslips-
compatible application on the handheld. Logit, running on the Series 5, enables tracking of up to six
separate clients simultaneously on a single screen. Having a mobile time and billing client on the Series 5
saves lawyers lost charges when away from the office. This is where the Psion Series 5 adds true value
running Logit as time and expense information can be easily imported into Timeslips for billing."
Speech Machines' CyberTranscriber, an Internet-based transcription service, is optional for those using
the Psion legal solution. When CyberTranscriber is coupled with the Psion Series 5, it offers attorneys
unmatched productivity. There is no waiting for tapes and transcripts to be transported. Users can dictate
into the Series 5's digital voice recorder, send to their PC and transmit via the Internet to the Speech
Machines' service. CyberTranscriber takes the digital mail message, transcribes and mails back a perfect
document in the attorney's selected word processor format. The service typically costs at least 20% less
than legal secretaries or secretarial services. CyberTranscriber can be used via the Psion Series 5's digital
recording feature or with a standard telephone.
"In this day and age, it is a competitive advantage for mobile professionals to have instant access to
information at all times, whether in the office or on the road. The Series 5's ability to handle a multitude
of tasks and integrate seamlessly with familiar legal office environments, makes Psion's mobile solution
for lawyers a compelling solution. We believe attorneys will value the long list of benefits the Psion
Mobile Solution offers," comments Ben Cesare, Vice President of Psion Incorporated.
