Novell Strengthens Commitment to the Java Platform

Industry Leaders Support Novell Commitment to Deploy Compatible Java™ Technology for Server-Side Business Applications

New York, New York — June 17, 1998 — Novell, Inc. today reaffirmed its commitment to the Java™ platform. Novell is working with the creator of the Java platform, Sun Microsystems, Inc., to ensure the continued compatibility of the NetWare® Virtual Machine for the Java platform with Sun's Java technology standards.

Most application development and deployment for the Java platform, to date, has been on client systems, but Novell® is focused on what it views as a larger opportunity to deploy a new class of Internet and intranet business applications on NetWare servers. The use of Java technology on the server allows faster performance, portability, and efficient partitioning of applications across clients and servers. Such server performance can also support applications fully integrated with network services such as Novell Directory Services™ (NDS™), Novell's industry-leading directory service, to enhance network management and user access to resources.

To realize this opportunity, Novell is focused on achieving the performance and scalability required to deploy server applications written for the Java platform in mission-critical environments. At the same time, Novell is committed to keeping the NetWare implementation of the Java Application Environment compatible with Sun's Java technology standards. NetWare 5, scheduled to ship this summer, will incorporate the world's fastest JVM as measured by the industry-standard VolanoMark benchmark. Into the future, Novell intends to aggressively maintain its leadership in JVM performance, scalability and compatibility with subsequent enhancements.

"Today's announcement underscores Novell's commitment to the Java platform and to providing its customers with a robust environment for the development of enterprise applications," said Jon Kannegaard, vice president of software products at Sun Microsystems, Inc.'s Java Software. "It is important for all of our partners to achieve optimal Java technology performance on their platforms, and we are pleased that Novell has enhanced its compatible implementation of the Java Virtual Machine for NetWare."

Novell is moving forward in commitment to Sun's Java technology standards. Applications written for other standards-compliant JVMs will run on NetWare 5 and developers will be able to create applications for NetWare using standard Java technologies and tools. The NetWare JVM also allows developers to use Novell's Open Solutions Architecture™ software development kit (SDK) to create Internet applications that utilize NDS and a range of other intelligent network services allied with the NetWare platform.

"The availability of Java compatible NetWare will help expand the opportunity for cross-platform business applications from IBM and others that provide customers with an easier way to develop and deploy solutions for the intranet and the Internet," said David Gee, program director, Java Marketing, IBM. "As a leader in driving adoption of Java in the enterprise, IBM welcomes Novell's commitment to standard Java."

"Novell is ensuring that their powerful and compatible Java Virtual Machine will continue to allow Netscape SuiteSpot customers to take full advantage of the NetWare platform," said John Paul, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Server Products Division, Netscape Communications Inc., "Netscape's industry-leading web server for managed sites is included with all NetWare 5 shipments. The NetWare JVM will allow our customers to take advantage of Novell's industry-leading performance for web servers and continues to raise the bar on JVM performance."

"Customers need a scalable, cost-effective and standards-compliant platform for database applications based on Java and Oracle technology," said Gary Bloom, Oracle's executive vice president of the Enterprise Products Division. "Many customers today are using the combination of Novell's networking services and Oracle's database technology to access and manage enterprise information. Novell's strategy will help extend his platform across the intranet and the Internet."

"In working with Novell on WebLogic's Tengah application server, we leveraged the high performance of the Novell Java Virtual Machine to jointly deliver the fastest, most scalable Java application server on the market," said Ali Kutay, CEO of WebLogic. "Novell steadfastly preserved compatibility with Java standards, delivering on the promise of Java as a standardized applications environment across the full range of desktop and server platforms. We are excited at the prospect of leveraging future Novell implementations to produce even more impressive value for our customers."
