NetBasic 7.0 Enhances Developers' and Administrators' Ability to Easily Create Server-
based and Web-enabled Applications for NetWare
forthcomingPROVO, Utah July 8, 1998 In a move that further strengthens its
NetWare® 5 as a premier platform for open Internet application development, Novell, Inc.
today
announced it has obtained an exclusive license from HiTecSoft Corp. of the NetBasic 7.0 for
Java scripting language. NetBasic
7.0 makes it easy for administrators and novice programmers to develop server-side and
Web-enabled
applications that take advantage of the robust network services allied with the NetWare
platform.
NetBasic 7.0 is a scripting language, compatible with the popularly used Visual Basic Script
(VBS), that
allows developers to easily create Internet and intranet applications. Scripting is the predominant
technique that developers are using to build server-side applications such as those used to build a
dynamic Web page with corporate database query capabilities. By embedding NetBasic 7.0 for
Java in
NetWare 5, Novell allows script developers to easily leverage the superior management and
control
features in NetWare 5, such as Novell Directory Services (NDS) and harness the
robust
features of Java for simpler and richer Web application development. The combination of
technologies
creates a truly integrated and open Internet platform which will result in faster and more stable
Internet
application development. The open development platform also encourages more applications to
be
developed for the server environment.
"The license of NetBasic 7.0 solidifies our commitment to make NetWare 5 an open, Internet
network
platform," said Dave Clare, Novell director of product and services strategy. "The license is yet
another
step by the company to make it easier for developers to maximize their investment in the
NetWare
platform and make it easier for them to develop server-side and Web-enabled applications."
NetWare 5 will now support key features of NetBasic 7.0 for Java, including full access to Java
Beans
and Java class libraries; full integration with Netscape Web servers and the ability to design
dynamic
HTML pages; compatibility with VBS and all other text editors, allowing developers to build
enhanced
server-side logic; and support of Novell's Universal Component System that can access Novell's
rich
networking services and share logic across a variety of languages for development including
Basic, Java,
Javascript, Perl, Python and Rexx.
Availability
Early access to NetBasic 7.0 is available today in the OSA SDK 1.0 which is available from free
download off of the Web at http://developer.novell.com.
NetBasic 7.0 will be available in the next release of the Novell Developer Kit slated for October
98. It
will also be available with the release of NetWare 5.0 later this year through enhancement
packs.
