Novell's GroupWise Gateway for Microsoft Exchange Eases Migration and Allows
Companies Ultimate Interoperability
Novell to Add GroupWise Gateway for Microsoft Exchange to Its Family of Migration
and Interoperability Solutions
PROVO, Utah July 28, 1998 Novell, Inc. today announced the upcoming
availability of a GroupWise® Gateway for Microsoft Exchange, a free migration and connectivity
utility for GroupWise. The new gateway, available for download from the web at the end of the month,
provides users with the necessary tools to easily and cost-effectively migrate from Microsoft Exchange to
GroupWise. In conjunction with Novell's gateways for Lotus Notes and cc:Mail, the GroupWise
Gateway for Microsoft Exchange extends the benefits and immediate value of GroupWise across diverse
collaboration products and platforms. The gateway for Exchange further confirms Novell's commitment
to giving businesses the freedom to choose networking solutions that lower the total cost of ownership
while addressing the needs of heterogenous environments.
The GroupWise Gateway for Microsoft Exchange leverages the integration of Novell Directory
Services (NDS) with GroupWise to provide a simple migration path from Exchange to
GroupWise and allows network administrators to transfer individuals or groups to GroupWise easily,
from a single point of administration. This migration process requires no network downtime and users
can realize the immediate value of GroupWise through the product's easy-to-use interface. Companies not
only save time and money, but also increase productivity during the migration process.
"The Novell GroupWise Gateway for Exchange provides businesses with the tools they need to migrate
to GroupWise while allowing them to perform the process inexpensively and with little effort," said Tom
Rhoton, director of product marketing, Novell Collaboration Services Group. "Customers can also
leverage the power of Novell's GroupWise, NDS and Novell's NetWare® across heterogenous
environments to provide advanced E-mail functionality, unified management of people and resources,
and enhanced performance."
Interoperability Solutions
The GroupWise Gateway for Exchange lets businesses with diverse groupware tools operate as a single
collaboration environment. For instance, an Exchange user can receive an appointment from a
GroupWise user and the appointment will automatically be translated into an Exchange format. By
adding the gateway for Exchange to its other gateway solutions, Novell provides system administrators
the tools they need to simultaneously connect users on GroupWise, to systems such as Lotus Notes and
cc:Mail, Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Mail.
Directory Synchronization
With the GroupWise Gateway for Exchange, network administrators can now more easily manage
Exchange directories as an extension of GroupWise. The directory synchronization service within the
GroupWise gateway allows users to exchange messages and information seamlessly by transporting and
converting GroupWise messages, including appointments, E-mail, notes, phone messages and tasks, into
a format supported by Microsoft Exchange. It also synchronizes the GroupWise user list with the
Exchange user list when a user is added, modified or removed from the GroupWise system, the change
is immediately sent through the gateway to the Exchange system.
Novell's Family of Migration and Interoperability Tools
The GroupWise Gateway for Microsoft Exchange enhances the existing collection of Novell migration
and interoperability tools that connect GroupWise users to a variety of messaging systems, message
transport protocols and communication standards. In addition to the GroupWise Exchange gateway,
Novell offers integrated GroupWise gateways for cc:Mail and Lotus Notes, and a separate migration
utility for Microsoft Mail.
The GroupWise Gateway for Microsoft Exchange runs on the Windows NT platform and requires
GroupWise 5.2 version or higher.
To further the savings to businesses migrating to GroupWise, Novell currently offers a 60 percent
competitive upgrade discount off GroupWise 5.2 new licenses. The migration package includes
GroupWise 5.2 software, a run-time version of NetWare, the GroupWise WebAccess client and the
SMTP/MIME gateway. A 25-user license is now priced at $1,392, reduced from $3,480. Additional
