Novell Further Cuts Network Management Costs with Delivery of ManageWise 2.6

  • ManageWise Upgrade Reduces Total Cost of Ownership by Supporting Proactive Management of Heterogeneous Networks

PROVO, Utah — August 18, 1998 — Reinforcing its commitment to help companies lower total cost of network ownership, Novell, Inc. today delivered as promised the next version of its award-winning network management product, ManageWise® 2.6. Novell's comprehensive, standards-based solution for mixed NetWare® and NT environments allows businesses to improve the performance and availability of their networks by simplifying network management. With new features such as NetWare 5 and NT Console support, NDS monitoring and Year 2000 readiness, ManageWise 2.6 helps administrators prevent and resolve network problems, thereby improving overall network productivity and lowering management costs.

"ManageWise 2.6 provides companies with a complete arsenal of tools to lower the cost of network management," said Michael Simpson, director of marketing at Novell. "ManageWise not only alerts network managers to problems before they occur and isolates problems quickly, but also allows them to gather data necessary to plan network asset purchases."

"ManageWise already saves us countless man-hours with its remote control features because we can manage our 1500 nodes from one location," said Robert Kraczek, network administrator for Intracoastal Health Systems in West Palm Beach, Florida. "Cost savings like that will be even greater with the NDS monitoring in version 2.6 because it will help me monitor directory events and problems from a central console."

Key New Features in ManageWise 2.6

ManageWise 2.6 offers businesses dramatic performance and reliability advances by anticipating and alerting network managers of potential network problems. The new features in ManageWise 2.6 keep the network running smoothly and increase the productivity of the entire organization:

  • NetWare 5 Support -- ManageWise 2.6 supports NetWare 3, NetWare 4.x and now, version 5, to allow businesses to implement the best combination of server operating systems to meet their needs.

  • Windows NT Console Support -- ManageWise 2.6 supports a console running on a Windows NT workstation, Windows 95 and Windows 98. This provides a central location from which network administrators can manage their networks more efficiently.

  • NDS™ Monitoring -- ManageWise 2.6 decreases network downtime by allowing network administrators to keep tabs on events that occur within the directory. It also uses SNMP alarms to alert administrators to potential problems.

  • Year 2000 Readiness -- ManageWise 2.6 is Year 2000-ready out of the box, allowing customers an easy transition into the next century with no changes in functionality.

Additional enhancements to ManageWise 2.6 include tighter integration with Novell's desktop management and software distribution solution, Z.E.N.works™; new alarms for improved NetWare server management; enhanced network traffic analysis with FDDI support and new decodes for IP-specific protocols; improved custom maps which allow administrators to tailor the network view to reflect the actual geography of their organizations; improved performance for autodiscovery of the network, which now takes place up to ten times faster; and enhanced virus protection for reduced risk of virus infiltration on network servers and desktops.
