Eagerly Awaited Pure IP Network Software Available for Internet Enabled
Businesses
PROVO, Utah -- September 14, 1998 -- Novell, Inc. today announced
NetWare®5 began shipping to customers last week, more than 10 days earlier than previously
announced. Open-standards-based NetWare 5 decreases networking costs in businesses of all sizes by
centralizing the management of network applications, desktops, users, data, printers, protocols and other
network components. NetWare 5 relies on the most powerful LDAPv.3 enterprise directory in the
industry, Novell Directory Services® (NDS), to provide real business benefits such as
efficient network management, Internet integration and security and greater end-user productivity.
Businesses worldwide have evaluated more than 350,000 pre-release copies of NetWare 5. Because of
the product's stability, many businesses, including Novell, have been using the third beta version as part
of their production networks and are eagerly planning to implement the released version of NetWare
5.
"We timed our NetWare purchase and implementation so that we could include NetWare 5 in our
network re-architecture project," said Jeff Miller, senior enterprise network engineer at the Chicago
Mercantile Exchange. "We are in the process of migrating to an all-IP network and NetWare 5 will be an
important cornerstone of that network. Thanks to other innovative Novell products, such as ZENworks
and NDS for NT, working with NetWare 5, we expect to see the time we spend on network
administration and support to decrease by at least half."
"NetWare 5 is not the end of the journey for us; it is, instead, the latest proof of Novell's transformation
in the Internet marketplace," said Dr. Eric Schmidt, Novell chairman and CEO. "NetWare 5 is everything
our customers have come to value in a network -- reliability, security and cutting-edge directory
technology -- now based on open Internet standards. Customers need to be able to manage their networks
today and plan for the future, smoothly and seamlessly. Novell and NetWare 5 are optimally positioned
to satisfy that requirement."
Running Java in Windows Environments
NetWare 5 is Novell's first server operating system to include the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for
Windows 95 and Windows NT. The JRE includes the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), just-in-time (JIT)
compiler, class libraries and other Java extensions to decrease the complexity of running Java in
Windows-based environments. The 100 percent Java support in both the NetWare 5 client and the
network server ensures that the thousands of Java applications, both today and in development, run well
on NetWare 5.
Novell Consulting and Education Programs
Novell Education's pre-release programs prepared thousands of networking professionals to assist
customers in their deployment of NetWare 5 networks. Currently, more than 3,500 Novell partners have
been trained on NetWare 5 through Novell Boot Camps and another 5,000 have completed PowerSell
sales training. Worldwide, more than 1,450 Novell Authorized Education Centers are already educating
IT professionals through extensive NetWare 5 seminars, courses and a new CNE curriculum.
In an effort to make NetWare 5 upgrades and new server installations as smooth and quick as possible,
Novell Customer Services has created a NetWare 5 migration service offering. The customizable
packages of consulting, education and technical support services will assist customers before, during and
after implementation of NetWare 5. The migration packages, which will be available in mid-October,
offer knowledgeable consulting, accessible project coordination, assistance and support and valuable
training for NetWare 5 planning, design, implementation and maintenance. For more information, visit
