World's Leading Application, Hardware Vendors Line Up Behind Novell's NetWare 5

More than 480 Server-based Applications and Products Support Novell's Pure IP Platform

SAN FRANCISCO — September 14, 1998 — Novell, Inc. today displayed, with the release of NetWare 5, the largest showing ever of industry support for NetWare® and other Novell products. To date, more than 480 server-based applications and products from hardware and software vendors have completed the process of becoming Novell Yes, Tested and Approved™ as compatible with NetWare 5. In addition, tens of thousands of client-based applications are enabled and empowered by NetWare 5 and other Novell platforms.

Today, hundreds of database, Java, anti-virus, network management, security and Web-based applications are ready to run on NetWare 5 including products from Attachmate, Computer Associates, Corel, Great Plains, Intuit, Netscape, Network Associates, Oracle and Unisys.

In addition, many of the industry's leading hardware vendors established the scalability of their servers last week by testing in a realistic network environment. Compaq, Fujitsu, Gateway, IBM, Intel, NEC and Siemens Nixdorf all passed Novell's NetWare 5 SuperLab Challenge by putting their servers to a full day's worth of extraordinary performance. The SuperLab tested the limits of some of the most reliable high-performance servers in the world, proving they live up to, and in some cases exceed, their published performance benchmarks. Each server was monitored for maintained connections, disk activity and processor utilization while being pounded by more than 1,000 workstations performing Oracle database access, Web access, electronic mail, file management, application support and Network Associates real- time network virus scanning for an eight-hour period.

"Intel is proud to support Novell in the release of NetWare 5," said John Miner, vice president and general manager, Intel's Enterprise Server Group. "Intel's ongoing relationship with Novell offers a highly optimized, scalable solution to over 80 million NetWare users today, according to Novell. NetWare 5, combined with mission critical applications running on Intel Pentium® II Xeon™ processor-based servers, will continue to provide even more powerful solutions to our mutual customers across the world."

"Our hardware and software partners have been looking forward to the release of NetWare 5 with great anticipation because of the incredible interest in the product from businesses world wide," said Christopher Stone, senior vice president, strategy and corporate development for Novell, Inc. "Customers will find many of their mission-critical business applications are available to run on NetWare 5 starting today."

World's Fastest JVM Developed By Novell

Novell's NetWare 5 also includes the world's fastest Java Virtual Machine (JVM) for running server- based applications and services written in Java, the programming language of the Internet. KeyLabs, an independent testing center for hardware and software products, recently published the results of their Volano mark JVM tests from NetWare 5, Windows NT 4 and UNIX. NetWare 5's JVM was significantly faster -- in some cases more than 2.5 times faster -- when compared to the JVM's in Windows NT and Unix.

The inclusion of the world's fastest JVM in NetWare 5 allows Novell to leverage the thousands of Java developers that are creating applications to run on Java today. NetWare 5 now supports more than 223 Java applications and applets from companies including Computer Associates, Digital Harbor, Hewlett Packard, Jscape Corporation, Lotus Development Corporation, Sun Microsystems, Sybase, Symantec and WebLogic.
