Novell Delivers High Performance Internet Security Management Solution - BorderManager
Enterprise Edition 3
Novell's Directory Service (NDS) Powers Integrated Internet Product Suite Featuring Secure Single Sign-On
September 22, 1998 Orem, UT Novell, Inc. today announced it has begun
controlled beta testing of BorderManager Enterprise Edition 3, the complete Internet security
management suite that enables businesses to leverage the power of Novell Directory Services®
(NDS) on NetWare, UNIX and NT networks. This standards-based suite allows organizations of all sizes
to cost-effectively deploy industry leading firewall, virtual private networking (VPN), authentication and
caching services for comprehensive security protection. Taking advantage of tight integration with NDS,
BorderManager Enterprise Edition is the first security management solution to deliver secure single sign-
on for users accessing confidential company information from any location - the Internet, intranet or
extranet.
BorderManager Enterprise Edition 3 builds on the success of Novell's initial BorderManager release,
now deployed worldwide at the border of leading business and government networks. Over 4.5 million
enterprise customers use BorderManager caching technology for Internet caching.
"According to a Delphi survey of Internet executives we conducted earlier this month, the biggest
inhibitors corporations face as they extend their networks to the Internet are speed and performance,
followed by security," commented John Gantz, Senior Vice President, Personal Systems and Services
Research, IDC. "Novell is directly addressing these issues with the BorderManager technology."
"Customers are looking for tightly integrated, best of breed security services without the implementation
headaches and premium costs associated with individual product purchases," stated Dave Shirk, vice
president of product management, Novell. "BorderManager Enterprise Edition delivers the total security
management solution that will further accelerate Novell's growth in the Internet security
marketplace."
Novell's BorderManager products have made an impact at Wallace, a leader in Integrated Supply
Management and Total Print Management services one of the nation's largest manufacturers and
distributors of information management products and commercial printing. Wallace is headquartered in
Lisle, Illinois, with manufacturing, distribution and sales facilities throughout the United States.
"Having implemented the initial version of BorderManager as well as participated in the beta of the
current version, we are extremely impressed with Novell's commitment to providing a comprehensive,
easy to manage security solution," stated Russel Schadd, Internet administrator for Wallace. "The
integration of these security features within NDS gives us a single point of administration for
implementing Internet access control on a per user basis."
Making Single Sign-On a Reality
BorderManager Enterprise Edition 3 is the only security management solution that delivers true single
sign-on for users across network services. From a home office or remote location, users can dial into their
ISP with dial-up services and BorderManager VPN services. Once authenticated using BorderManager
Authentication Service, users can open a secure VPN tunnel, gain access to the corporate network
information via BorderManager firewall services and then access Web resources via BorderManager
FastCache. This single sign-on is delivered through integration with Novell Directory Services, allowing
for security policies to be enforced transparently via a single point of management.
