Richard L. Nolan Appointed to Novell Board of Directors

Harvard Business School Authority on the Information Economy Joins Network Software Leader

PROVO, Utah — September 23, 1998 — Novell, Inc. today announced the appointment to the company's Board of Directors of Richard L. Nolan, the William Barclay Harding Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. Professor Nolan is the originator of the "Stages Theory," one of the most widely used management frameworks for information technology planning, and is a leading authority in guiding businesses through the transformation from an industrial to an information economy.

Professor Nolan earned his B.A. from the University of Washington in Productions and Operations Research in 1962, and his M.B.A and PhD. in 1963 and 1966, respectively. He returned to the faculty of Harvard Business School in 1991, after serving as the chairman of the consulting firm Nolan, Norton & Co.

Nolan's appointment increases Novell's board representation to nine. In addition to Nolan and Schmidt, the board includes: John Young as vice chairman, the former president and chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard Company; Elaine R.Bond, formerly senior vice president with chief technology officer responsibilities at Chase Manhattan Bank; Hans-Werner Hector, cofounder and former member of the advisory board of SAP, AG, Germany; Reed Hundt, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Bill Joy, Sun Microsystems cofounder and vice president for research; Jack L. Messman, president and chairman of Union Pacific Resources Group Inc.; and Larry W. Sonsini, member of the law firm of Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich and Rosati.
