Novell and Network Associates Establish Strategic Relationship To Deliver Advanced Network Virus Protection

Leading Providers of Networking and Anti-virus Technologies Join In Response to Customer Needs

PROVO, Utah — October 5, 1998 — Continuing its leadership in directory-enabled networking for secure business transactions, Novell, Inc. (NASDAQ:NOVL) today announced a partnership with Network Associates, Inc., (NASDAQ:NETA) to provide network solutions with completely integrated, comprehensive virus protection. As a result of the partnership, Network Associates' advanced anti-virus software will ship with the newly announced NetWare for Small Business 4.2 in the fourth quarter of 1998 and will be included in additional products from Novell. The combination of services is intended to allow businesses to protect their corporate investments from viruses and other threats to information with minimal time and effort.

The integration of Network Associates' security technology with Novell's leading network management components further eases the maintenance of combating viruses. Customers will be able to use Novell's networking solutions while obtaining cutting-edge protection for their corporate data, without having to install and configure a separate application or dedicate valuable resources to acquire and manage security features.

According to Dataquest, a leading computer industry research firm, the market for anti-virus products experienced 140 percent overall growth rate in 1997, compared with 1996. The anti-virus market is currently estimated at nearly $600 million for 1997.

"With this relationship, the company will expand protection into the NetWare environment, helping IS managers protect large NetWare installations. Novell customers can now get first-class protection against viruses from existing Novell distributors, providing a win-win situation for Novell customers, Novell and Network Associates."

NetShield for NetWare has already received Novell Yes Tested and Approved certification, ensuring resellers and customers fully compatible anti-virus protection. The product also provides the following three features:

  • New compressed file support allowing users to protect a greater number of compressed file formats

  • Improved scan performance to decrease the length of time necessary to scan files

  • Automatic registry restoration for automatically restoring corrupted NetShield registries, ensuring continuous uptime and 24 hour anti-virus protection

Pricing and Availability

Customers will be able to purchase a one year subscription of Network Associates' NetShield from Novell for $100 for five users. Additional pricing configurations are available for Network Associates' VirusScan and GroupShield products.

The first opportunity for Novell customers to obtain Network Associates NetShield and VirusScan will be with NetWare for Small Business 4.2 which is scheduled to be available in the fourth quarter of 1998. Availability of the Network Associates anti-virus software with other specific Novell products will be announced as they ship.
