SkyCache and Novell Announce Certification of Internet Caching Solution for ISPs, Enterprises and Web-Enabled Businesses

Novell's BorderManager FastCache Now SkyCache Certified

PROVO, Utah — October 14, 1998 — SkyCache Inc., the world's premier high-speed datacasting company revolutionizing the Internet, and Novell, Inc., the Internet caching leader, today announced that Novell's BorderManager™ FastCache is certified SkyCache Compatible. This certification will allow the 4.5 million enterprise customers currently using BorderManager FastCache technology for accelerating access to popular Web pages to realize additional performance enhancements through cache injections of high-quality data from SkyCache satellite broadcast technology.

ISPs and Web-enabled businesses will realize reduced bandwidth and communications costs plus faster response times when the most popular, constantly updated Internet and news traffic is delivered via SkyCache's satellite broadcast service to BorderManager FastCache. End users reap faster response times since the most commonly requested Web pages are stored at local Web cache servers.

"Testing BorderManager FastCache was a pleasant surprise. Novell is obviously serious about ISPs and caching," stated Doug Humphrey, president and CEO of SkyCache. "The combination of SkyCache and BorderManager FastCache provides ISPs and enterprise customers a powerful solution for maximizing bandwidth and improving the cache hit ratio to improve customer and end user performance."

SkyCache, through a combination of its patent-pending Reactive Caching system and cache prepopulation, provides superior performance by supplementing a stand-alone cache with high-quality data delivered by satellite broadcast technology. The SkyCache Release 1.0 cache turbocharging service enables ISPs to add more customers to existing leased line capacity and deliver substantially faster web page response times in many cases.

"Caching enables enterprise customers and ISPs to maximize use of available network bandwidth and improve performance for the end user," commented Chris Stone, senior vice president of corporate strategy and development of Novell. "As businesses continue to add Web servers and intranets to their networks, SkyCache is a good complement to FastCache for creating a cost-effective caching solution for our customers. Given the successful adoption of Novell's caching technology in the enterprise market, we can now translate that expertise to ISPs and customers of all sizes that are now beginning to use the Web for business."

BorderManager FastCache is the performance foundation of BorderManager Enterprise Edition 3, Novell's Internet security management suite for NDS-enabled networks. BorderManager FastCache, the industry's fastest, most scalable Internet caching solution for Web-enabled businesses, content publishers and ISPs, speeds user access to popular Web information, reduces network bandwidth requirements and provides a cost effective alternative to upgrading overburdened Web servers.

Leveraging the performance strengths of NetWare® 5, BorderManager FastCache can handle over 100,000 simultaneous persistent connections and can offload as much as 75% of the Web traffic on an Internet connection. BorderManager FastCache provides a strong performance foundation for firewalls already installed in a network environment and can be easily integrated in any NetWare, NT, UNIX or heterogeneous network.

SkyCache uses satellite broadcast technology to constantly load the most often requested Internet and Web pages directly into customer-side ICP-compliant caches. In addition, SkyCache uses reporting statistics from customers to build a large cache community for the reactive caching component of the service.

SkyCache, by virtue of being a true broadcast mechanism to deliver data, solves updating and communications problems across distributed caching systems implemented by Tier 1 ISPs and enterprises. Since all caches are constantly and directly refreshed with the most frequently accessed Web pages via satellite, terrestrial leased line bandwidth is not consumed by cache communication and data updating, nor is it necessary to implement a multi-tiered hierarchical infrastructure.

The SkyCache certification covers BorderManager v2.1 and BorderManager FastCache v2.1, which are currently shipping, as well as BorderManager Enterprise Edition 3 and BorderManager FastCache 3, which are currently in controlled beta.
