Novell Alliance and Product Announcements Reflect Industry Trend: Broad Acceptance and Application of Novell's Directory Service
New Third-Party Adoption of NDS and Directory-Based Solutions Give Businesses More Manageable, Secure Networks; Novell CEO and Chairman Dr. Eric Schmidt Addresses National Trade Show Audience
ATLANTA, GA (NetWorld+Interop Show) October 19, 1998 Addressing
customer needs for open networks
that are secure, manageable and affordable to maintain and upgrade, Novell, Inc. this week will
announce
an alliance and product enhancements that demonstrate the versatility and widespread acceptance
of
industry-leading Novell Directory Service (NDS). For organizations of all kinds, the resulting
directory-
enabled solutions will simplify and reduce the costs of integrating their complex networks with
the
Internet, opening the way for new applications and categories of business that improve
competitiveness
and productivity.
The expanded third-party support for NDS, which now includes more than 400 applications, is
amplified
by today's announcement by Novell and Lucent Technologies that the two companies will work
together
to advance directory-enabled network solutions. The agreement includes Lucent's licensing of
NDS for
use with the company's high-capacity Cajun P550 telecommunications switch. Directory-enabled
Lucent
devices will allow customers to optimize network efficiency for increased end-user productivity
and
decreased cost of ownership.
Other Novell announcements this week coincide with the NetWorld+Interop Trade Show in
Atlanta,
where Novell Chairman and CEO Dr. Eric Schmidt will deliver a keynote address titled
Charting a
Course in a Networked World on Thursday, October 22 at 9 a.m. EDT in Ballrooms II and III
(West
Hall, Level 4) at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. Dr. Schmidt will explore how
directory-
based networks and applications enable organizations to establish their identities in virtual
communities
and locate information resources in a networked world.
In other NetWorld+Interop announcements, Novell will introduce two new solutions in the
BorderManager product family, Novell's complete Internet security management suite for
NDS-
enabled networks. This announcement is scheduled to take place during a NetWorld+Interop
press
conference on Tuesday, October 20 at 7 p.m. EDT at the Marriott Marquis, Bonn Room, in
Atlanta.
During NetWorld+Interop, Novell will also introduce the winners of its popular DeveloperNet
contest
and display their directory-enabled applications in the Partner Pavilion area of the Novell booth
(#4611)
at the Georgia World Congress Center. Novell's leading network solutions will be on display in
the
Novell booth, where the company will be showcasing such products as the BorderManager
Enterprise
Edition suite of Internet services and the recently-released NetWare® 5 server platform.
As in recent years, Novell will be providing a directory-enabled intranet specifically for
NetWorld+Interop participants. The network solution, called Novell Connecting Points, allows
all
registered attendees to send and retrieve E-mail, schedule appointments and access the Internet
from
several central locations on the tradeshow floor.
