NetWare 5 Benefits Now Available to Organizations Worldwide in Seven
Languages
PROVO, Utah October 21, 1998 Closely following the English version of
the
company's flagship product, Novell, Inc. today announced the early shipment of six additional
localized
versions of NetWare 5, including Portuguese, French, Italian, German and Spanish. A Japanese
version is
expected to ship by Oct. 23. Novell continues to deliver NetWare 5 ahead of schedule to
organizations
and corporations worldwide, providing them with the ability to run reliable, scalable and secure
networks
based on open Internet standards, including support for pure TCP/IP.
Novell's channel partners are enthused about the customer demand for NetWare 5. "We strongly
support
and are recommending our customers convert to NetWare 5," said Mike Skinner, president of
Ideal
Technology Solutions, a solutions integrator from Royal Oak, Mich. "NetWare 5 has become a
major
initiative for our company and we're seeing a great deal of interest from our customers to go to
the pure
IP environment of NetWare 5."
NetWare 5 is supported by a broad spectrum of networking services, including support for
Lightweight
Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) version 3, Novell® Directory Services®
(NDS),
NDS for NT and Z.E.N.works all contributing to easy, time- and cost-efficient network
administration.
"The barriers of geography and technology that once impeded the flow of information are rapidly
falling
away," said Dr. Eric Schmidt, Novell Chairman and CEO. "NetWare 5, with its Novell Directory
Services and foundation of Internet standards, gives businesses the secure and manageable
networks they
need today to compete and thrive in this global context. The availability of NetWare 5 in multiple
languages is one more way that Novell solutions transcend the traditional barriers, enabling
organizations
everywhere to establish their identities on the world stage."
New Customers Are Deploying NetWare 5
In addition to the existing 81 million users that are excited about NetWare 5, new customers are
installing NetWare 5 in mission-critical network environments. The Chicago Mercantile
Exchange
recently decided to replace 52 OS/2 and 18 NT servers with 14 NetWare 5 servers. "At the
Chicago
Mercantile Exchange, downtime is not an optionso we went with NetWare 5 for our core
networking
services," said Jeff Miller, senior enterprise network engineer, Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
"We are
also going to leverage NDS to manage our remaining NT servers which will cut our
administrative costs
by 70 percent."
At the Community College of Southern Nevada, Tom Wilson, a senior systems administrator,
had a new
and challenging problem to solve. "We had to manage 35,000 users and two independent
organizations
with the same hardware and software without duplicating any efforts," said Wilson. Novell
provided the
only practical solution with NetWare 5, BorderManager and NDS. "We have successfully
deployed this solution with four administrators. That's practical efficiency," said Wilson.
NetWare 5 Drives Timely Upgrades
With the broad and robust business values of NetWare 5, customers are utilizing the remaining
time prior
to Year 2000 lockdowns to implement pure IP and Z.E.N.works, increasing bandwidth utilization
and
decreasing the cost of discovering, resolving and maintaining Year 2000 compliance on
desktops.
Businesses across the globe have evaluated more than 350,000 pre-release copies of NetWare 5.
Because
of the product's stability, many businesses, including Novell, have been using the third beta as
part of
their production networks and are planning to implement the released version of NetWare 5.
Running Java in Windows Environments
NetWare 5 is Novell's first server operating system to include the Java Runtime
Environment (JRE) for Windows* 95 and Windows NT*. The JRE includes the Java Virtual
Machine
(JVM), just-in-time (JIT) compiler, class libraries and other Java extensions to decrease the
complexity
of running Java in Windows-based environments. The 100 percent Java support in both the
NetWare 5
client and the network server ensures that the thousands of Java applications, both today and in
development, run well on NetWare 5.
In an overwhelming show of support for NetWare 5, developers have created over 1,000
applications and
products that have earned the Novell Yes, Tested and Approved designation. More than 600,000
Java
developers can now develop applications to NetWare 5.
Novell Customer Services
Novell Education's pre-release programs prepared thousands of networking professionals to
assist
customers in their deployment of NetWare 5 networks. Currently, more than 3,500 Novell
partners have
been trained on NetWare 5 through Novell Boot Camps and another 5,000 have completed
Novell
PowerSell sales training. Worldwide, more than 1,450 Novell Authorized Education
CenterSM facilities are already educating IT professionals through extensive
NetWare 5
seminars, courses and a new CNE® curriculum.
End users are currently taking advantage of Novell's "Now Starts Here" tour which focuses on
the
Internet, Year 2000 and network security issues. More than 6,000 end users have attended the
first 12
stops of the tour. Presentations in 38 additional cities are scheduled through Nov.18. The tour is
consistently attracting standing room only audiences at each venue. For a complete tour schedule,

In an effort to make NetWare 5 upgrades and new server installations as smooth and quick as
possible,

packages on consulting, education and technical support services will assist customers before,
during and
after implementation of NetWare 5. The migration packages, which will be available in
mid-October,
offer knowledgeable consulting, accessible project coordination, assistance and support and
