Novell and Developer Partners Showcase New Applications Enabled by Novell Directory
Services
Developer Contest winners now in the running for grand prizes of up to $3 million
investment and $25,000 cash; DeveloperNet program growing exponentially
NetWorld + Interop, ATLANTA October 21, 1998 Novell, Inc. and its
developer partners today showcased a new wave of network applications that use Novell's
industry-leading directory service (NDS) to provide customers with superior
manageability,
security, and access to information resources distributed across the enterprise and the Internet.
Directory-enabled applications on display here at the Novell Partner Pavilion (Booth # 4905)
include two
categories of first-round winners in Novell's ongoing Developer Contest. The contest, which
began in
May and runs through August 1999, encourages developers to create applications that leverage
NDS. The
commercial category winner, now in the running for the grand prize of up to $3 million in
venture capital
from Novell's Internet Equity Fund, is HiTecSoft Corp. for the WebConsole 3.0 graphical
network
management solution. In the custom category, Clemson University and their Authentication
Server
network security solution wins first-round honors and is now qualified to win the grand prize of
$25,000.
More than 400 products now leverage the network management and security infrastructure
provided by
NDS, the world's most popular directory service with over 40 million users. In addition to the
category
winners, seven other contest finalists are teaming with Novell to demonstrate their
directory-enabled
applications: SBT Accounting Systems, Inc - SBT Executive Series; Plus Factor Software, Inc. -
PlusFactor Office Pack; NetPro - DS Expert; Netoria - SF Lock; Network Associates -
NetShield;
Office-Net KKT - Niagra Mail; and Pervasive Software - Pervasive SQL.
"Everyone wins in this contest the customer, the developer and Novell," said Chris Stone,
senior vice
president of strategy and corporate development, Novell, Inc. "This contest exists to help
developers take
advantage of the Internet standards-based NetWare® platform and extends Novell's
leadership in
directory solutions that enhance the security, reliability, performance and manageability of
networks."
Clemson University's authentication server leverages NDS on many levels, providing seamless
connections and expanding NDS security, making it the first-quarter winner in the custom
application
category. The solution leverages NDS to provide single-user ID and password authentication for
seamless connections to NetWare environments, IBM mainframes, Microsoft Windows NT
servers and
flavors of UNIX including Linux and BSD. It also extends NDS authentication security to
applications
on these platforms by making NDS resources available to platform developers. As the winner of
the
Custom Application category, Clemson receives prizes including a vacation package for four, a
DeveloperNet Professional subscription, a subscription to AppNotes and a chance for the
$25,000 grand
prize to be awarded in 1999.
"If you can do one thing better than anyone else, you've found your place in the world," said
David
Condrey, LAN Systems Manager Clemson University. "Novell clearly has their place in the
world. When
it comes to our directory needs, we wouldn't have done anything differently. NDS has played the
major
role in unifying the campus, without a doubt."
A simple, user-friendly client-side GUI combines with the power of NDS to make HiTecSoft's
WebConsole v3.0a the first-quarter winner in the commercial category. WebConsole is a turnkey
network solution that allows network administrators to securely access and manage NetWare file
servers
using NDS through a Web browser interface. Through WebConsole, administrators and help
desk
personnel can perform NDS commands such as adding, deleting and moving users,
organizational units,
and other NDS objects through the Web browser as well as administer passwords, set time
restrictions,
create incident reports, add and delete users, reset user accounts, and give printer access. Beyond
the
NDS functionality, WebConsole, is a complete server management solution allowing
administrators to
securely access, configure, troubleshoot, generate security reports, disburse patches, and monitor
NetWare servers. Prizes awarded to HiTecSoft include priority consideration for Novell's Internet
Equity
Fund, inclusion in the BrainShare technology lab and Novell Partner Pavillion, Web banner on
the
Novell Solution page and other co-marketing opportunities.
"We are very excited to win the Best Commercial Application award from Novell," said Sean
Moshir,
CEO of HiTecSoft Corporation. "WebConsole provides the best Web based management for
Novell's
NetWare today and we owe that to Novell's developer program. While developing WebConsole,
Novell's
DeveloperNet program was a great asset to us and I recommend it to all ISVs."
Novell DeveloperNet Program Growth
The Novell Developer Contest builds on a year of exponential growth in Novell's developer
programs.
Since 1997, DeveloperNet membership has grown more than 300 percent and Website traffic has
increased four-fold. Increased interest in the program is attributable to both NDS and NetWare 5,
Novell's directory-enabled network server platform based on pure Internet Protocol (IP), for
which more
than 1,000 hardware and software products have received Novell Yes, Tested and Approved
certification.
In addition to platform and directory enhancements, new tools and interfaces make it easy for
today's
developers to leverage the NetWare platform, NDS, and Novell's complete foundation of
distributed
network services. For example, Metrowerks CodeWarrior for NetWare provides developers a
common
tool for creating NLMs and Java applications. Novell's DLL Loader now enables developers to
create
NetWare DLLs with Metrowerks, Microsoft and INPRISE compilers. Furthermore,
Novell
provides NDS components for popular technologies such as Java, JavaBeans, CORBA, ActiveX,
LDAP,
ADSI, Scripting and ODBC.
Novell is currently conducting developer workshops in cities around the world to teach the gamut
of
NetWare 5, NDS, Java and Oracle8 development. The workshops are free
for
DeveloperNet members. Attendance has exceeded all expectations and has reached overflow
capacity.
