Novell and PeopleSoft Integration Solution Improves Business Processes, Lowers Network
Administrative Costs
Novell Delivers NDS Integration for PeopleSoft to Automate Creation of Employee Digital
Personas and Allow "Self-Service" Data Updates
PeopleSoft Users' Conference 1998, SAN FRANCISCO November 2, 1998
Novell®, Inc. today announced the availability of its Novell Directory Services®
(NDS) Integration for PeopleSoft, further demonstrating Novell's commitment to provide
businesses the tools they need to directory-enable their entire enterprise networks. Created by Novell
Consulting Services, this integration is the next in a series of important NDS-based solutions. With the
services of a Novell consultant to implement the solution, an organization's existing NDS and PeopleSoft
applications are integrated, streamlining related administrative and business functions. This solution
provides end users with secure authentication through NDS and self-service access to PeopleSoft's mission-
critical applications. Network administrators are given the ability to securely and automatically add, delete
and change employee records; thereby achieving simplified database administration and hiring/termination
processes by synchronizing data between NDS and PeopleSoft. This integration solution is being
demonstrated today at the PeopleSoft Users' Conference 1998.
"Novell chose to integrate NDS with PeopleSoft because our rapidly growing list of mutual customers will
greatly benefit from directory-enabled access to critical applications that companies use to run their
businesses," said Rich Nortz, senior vice president of Novell customer services. "By making simple
database updates, additions and deletions easy and secure for employees and administrators to manage,
organizations can expect to substantially lower administrative time and costs and improve general
productivity in their enterprise."
NDS and PeopleSoft Integration
NDS Integration for PeopleSoft decreases administration time by synchronizing NDS with PeopleSoft's
enterprise applications, enabling organizations to easily add or remove an individual from the organization's
database. When an employee is added to the PeopleSoft system, an NDS user account is automatically
created on the network, giving them immediate access to generally available network resources such as
applications, printers and servers without network administrator assistance.
"PeopleSoft recognizes the value of the network directory in the enterprise and believes that integration
with NDS will help our customers reduce administrative costs for the entire network," said Robert Eve,
vice president of Software Alliances, PeopleSoft. "The potential is there to extend directory-enabled
PeopleSoft to the rest of the enterprise, further simplifying administration and lowering costs."
PeopleSoft's enterprise applications seamlessly integrate and consolidate such mission-critical operations as
human resources, financials, distribution, materials management, manufacturing, supply chain management
and student administration. With NDS Integration for PeopleSoft, IS managers will not have to create and
maintain a redundant employee directory; they will have fewer passwords to manage; and fewer help desk
calls from users who have forgotten multiple passwords. The users themselves will have a single log-in to
the network and PeopleSoft resources as well as the assured security of their personal information due to
the strong authentication services in NDS.
"NDS integration for PeopleSoft will add greater functionality to our existing NDS network and will
greatly reduce overall administrative costs," said Brenda Gombosky, director of information technology,
data center services, University of Louisville. "Our employees will be able to access information through
NDS and, since all processes are completed through a browser, access to forms will be as simple as
accessing the Internet or sending e-mail."
With the NDS Integration for PeopleSoft, end users are able to maintain their own personal employee
records, which eliminates data entry redundancy, lowering database administrative costs through improved
accuracy and timeliness of data entry. This tight integration also offers users single-point access to forms,
information and applications across the network, through a Web browser or Novell's e-mail and
collaboration product, GroupWise®. The NDS element in this integration further ensures employee
self-service transactions are secure and guarantees that the information will only be seen and changed by
the respective employee.
For example, human resources departments can allow employees to update their own information such as
phone numbers, home addresses and W-4 forms and to view vacation balances, direct deposit notifications
and benefits summaries; and universities can offer students easy viewing access to their transcripts and
course information. Because changes are automatically recorded in NDS and the PeopleSoft database
simultaneously, IS managers no longer have to manually synchronize employee data across two databases.
