Ongoing Alliance between Networking and Database Leaders to Advance Directory-Enabled Internet Computing
SAN FRANCISCO (Oracle OpenWorld®) November 10, 1998
Novell,
Inc., the world's leading provider of directory-enabled network solutions, today announced its
support for
Oracle8i, the database for the Internet. Working together, Novell's NetWare® and
Oracle8i
will consolidate database information, applications and files onto a centralized server that can be
easily
accessed through a Web browser. This combination of directory and database technology will
simplify
network management, enhance data security , and provide users and administrators with browser
access
and a single sign-on to both their Novell networks and Internet applications based on
Oracle®
technology. Novell expects to make Oracle8i available with future versions of NetWare.
Oracle8i will enable organizations to reduce the cost and complexity of applications currently
distributed
across wide-area networks by using the public Internet for both intra-company and inter-company
communication. The security and management capabilities of Novell Directory Services
(NDS),
along with Oracle8i support for Java technology, Web sites, and other dynamic Web-based
programs, will
allow customers to extend applications to customers and suppliers and implement new forms of
electronic
commerce.
"In order to move critical applications to the Internet, customers need the higher level of security
and
control that only directory-enabled solutions can provide," said Steve Adelman, Novell's vice
president for
corporate development. "That's what Oracle and Novell will offer, along with the high
performance and
ease of management that our joint customers demand."
"The common vision for Internet Computing between our two companies has resulted in a highly
optimized,
tightly integrated Oracle8i for NetWare," said Mike Rocha, Oracle's senior vice president of the
Platform
Technology Division. "Customers can anticipate unique benefits when using Oracle8i and
NetWare as an
integrated application platform to develop, deploy and manage Internet-based business solutions."
