Novell Delivers Enhanced Directory Solution for Managing NT Servers, Applications, Users and the NT-Only Branch Office

Novell Unveils New Pricing Model for NDS for NT 2.0

PROVO, Utah — December 2, 1998 — Novell®, Inc. today announced the availability of NDS for NT™ 2.0, the company's cost-saving directory solution for managing Microsoft NT servers and applications in mixed networks. The new product enables businesses to manage heterogeneous corporate environments as well as NT-only branch offices and departments through a unified directory service. By providing a single point of administration and a single user login, NDS for NT 2.0 ensures enhanced productivity and simplified administration of an organization's network. NDS for NT 2.0 is now available and is sold as two separate license components: $26 per user and $695 per NT replica/server. For a limited time, Novell is offering NetWare 4.x and NetWare 5 customers the NT replica/server free for each NetWare server license they already have. NDS for NT 1.0 customers can obtain free matching user license for NDS for NT 2.0 through January 31, 1999.

"Novell is committed to providing an effective network management solution to businesses with mixed network environments. We want to ensure that our customers can easily deploy and manage all their software products and applications," said Ed McGarr, vice president of product marketing, Novell. "With this new version of NDS for NT, we are extending the strength of the industry-leading directory service from the corporate headquarters to the NT-only branch office, allowing our customers to benefit from enterprise management on NT — no matter where it is deployed."

With the delivery of NDS for NT 2.0, Novell further demonstrates its leadership in providing businesses with cost-effective network solutions that unify and simplify their complex networks. The new directory solution extends the benefits that NDS currently offers to over 40 million users, to customers of mixed networks with NT Servers in branch and large offices.

"Like many companies, we believe that an integrated platform with a mix of both NetWare and NT servers will best serve our need for specific applications. NDS for NT 2.0 enables us to manage our operations, including our NT-only branch offices, from a central point — saving my company time and money," said Richard Culling, LAN/WAN administrator for Copeland Corporation, a manufacturing company in Sinney, Ohio. "The new password synchronization feature is also a definite plus for us as it ensures security, while allowing users to access network resources easily."

New Features Improve Integrated Network Management

By integrating NT and NetWare server management, NDS for NT 2.0 reduces administration time, simplifies network management and lowers network ownership costs. NDS for NT 2.0 improves file share management for network administrators with an easy-to-use, integrated file management snap-in GUI utility. The Domain Object Wizard, which creates a single network data repository by moving existing NT domain information to NDS, further simplifies branch office management and allows administrators to easily deploy Microsoft applications. NDS for NT 2.0 also offers dramatic improvements in scalability — tests conducted successfully migrated up to and beyond the maximum domain size of 40,000 objects to NDS.

Increased Productivity in NT-only Branch Offices and Departments

NDS for NT 2.0 enables centralized administration of NT-only branch offices and departments by allowing an NDS replica to reside directly on a local NT Server. From a single point of administration, network administrators can manage the NT-only branch office and department, and easily integrate and deploy cost- saving, directory-enabled applications such as Novell's GroupWise®, ManageWise® and Z.E.N.works™. NDS for NT 2.0 increases user productivity by providing a single login and quick, reliable access to all network resources — without having to communicate across a slow WAN link for authentication. In addition, new password synchronization improves security by eliminating multiple passwords, enhancing resource sharing across the network.

Pricing and Availability

NDS for NT 2.0 is now available and has two licensing components: a server license and a per-user connection license. The licenses can be purchased for $26 per user and $695 per NT replica/server. A server license is required in order to place an NDS replica on an NT server. However, customers who are using NDS for NT 2.0 to re-direct NT domains to NDS on NetWare servers will not require a server license. In either case, user licenses are required. As a special incentive to NetWare 4.x and NetWare 5 customers, Novell is offering the replica free for each NetWare server license they already have. This promotion is effective through January 31, 1999 and customers can download the replica server software from the Novell Web site at http://www.novell.com/download/.

NDS for NT 1.0 customers can obtain free NDS for NT 2.0 user connection licenses for each user license they currently have. Customers can download the free user license upgrade for NDS for NT 2.0 from the Web at http://www.novell.com/download/ through January 31, 1999.
