Novell Boosts Directory-Enabled Java Development With New Developer Kit

One-stop-shop eases and speeds Novell directory application development; Will include Sun Microsystem's JDK 1.2

NEW YORK (Java Business Expo) — December 8, 1998 — Java™ developers can now capitalize on the power of Novell, Inc.'s networking and directory leadership with the availability of the new Novell Developer Kit. The comprehensive kit provides, for the first time in one place, all the tools developers need to create applications for Novell's directory-enabled platform and services, including NetWare®, Novell Directory Services® (NDS™), GroupWise® and ManageWise®.

The Novell Developer Kit, together with Novell's industry-leading products, extends Novell's leadership role in adding value to Java on the server. Java developers can now take advantage of Novell's directory- enabled platform to create secure, manageable network solutions that can be distributed across the enterprise and on the Internet. In addition, Novell's installed base of over 80 million users provides Java developers with a broad opportunity for their network applications. The Novell Developer Kit is available for free via the Web to members of DeveloperNet, Novell's developer program.

"As the industry's focus shifts from the desktop to the heterogeneous network, we see an exciting opportunity for server-side Java," said Chris Stone, senior vice president of corporate strategy and development. "The world can count on Novell to provide the best directory and the fastest, most scalable and reliable Java platform. Now we're making it easier than ever for developers to capitalize on the power of Java, NDS and NetWare. We completely support the standard JDK definition and will include Sun's JDK 1.2 in the Novell Developer Kit in mid-1999. We are committed to tracking Sun's releases of Java with as little lag time as possible."

Novell developer momentum is building. In the past year, DeveloperNet subscriptions have increased more than 153 percent, developer Web downloads have increased more than 886 percent and 250 Java applications have been Yes, Tested and Approved™. Initiatives such as the Novell Developer Contest, which runs through 1999, have piqued developer interest. More than 3,500 people have attended worldwide developer workshops and a free NetWare 5 Yes, Tested and Approved promotion for software applications runs through March 20. For more information, visit http://developer.novell.com.

The Novell Developer Kit is the single source for Novell's open Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and allows easy access to Novell's advanced directory, network, Internet, and management services, whether developers use C/C++ APIs, Java class libraries and Enterprise JavaBeans, or scripting languages, such as Visual Basic, JavaScripts, and Perl. The Novell Developer Kit also provides the tools, test suites, and compatibility tests that network administrators and developers need to build manageable, Internet- ready, directory-enabled solutions. Links to products from Java development partners including Bulletproof, Cloudscape, IBM, Live, Metrowerks, Sun and Symantec are included.

Java and Novell Products

The Novell Developer Kit is the developer's entree to Novell's Open Solutions Architecture™, the strategy by which Novell fully embraces Java across its platform and services. Java takes the benefit of NetWare and makes it available to a broad audience of developers, making NetWare an application serving platform.

In 1998, Novell reached the juncture where all its major products utilize NDS and new products add to the expanding portfolio of directory-enabled solutions. Through industry partnerships, Internet Equity Fund investments and developer programs, Novell will also continue to catalyze third-party development of NDS-enabled applications and services. Novell worked closely with JavaSoft on the definition of the Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI) and has released a JNDI Service Provider which allows NDS access via Java.

Novell products that use Java and NDS include ConsoleOne and the forthcoming Java hardware management agent technology recently demonstrated at fall COMDEX. Console One, Novell's 100 percent Java-based GUI management framework, is currently shipping in NetWare 5 and is available in the Novell Developer Kit. Pricing and availability of the new Java management agent technology has not been set.

Pricing and Availability of the Novell Developer Kit

The Novell Developer Kit is available for free via the Web to all DeveloperNet members and is updated every six weeks. Professional, Partner and Strategic level DeveloperNet members will automatically receive a CD edition. The next CD release is targeted for March, 1999.
