Major Technology Vendors Announce Directory Plans, Discuss NDS Support
at Novell's Global Partner Summit
SNOWBIRD, Utah January 20, 1999 Industry leaders gathered
at Novell's Global Partner Summit to support and discuss partnership strategies
for Novell Directory Services® (NDS™). NDS is the world's leading cross-platform
directory technology for managing the complexity of today's networks. This
year's summit held here from Jan. 19 20, 1999, focused on the strategic
value of partnering with Novell to utilize NDS in software applications.
The unprecedented attendance at the summit by CEOs and high profile executives
from around the world reflected industry momentum for NDS and significant
market opportunities presented by partnerships around Novell's directory
service.
The participants at this year's summit are comprised of global technology
partners and leading industry analysts. Over 200 partners including AT&T,
Cisco, Compaq, Dell, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Intel, Lucent Technologies,
Nortel Networks, Oracle and Sun Microsystems attended the summit. Discussion
focused on creating business opportunities around the management and security
infrastructure provided by NDS. Partners and analysts applauded Novell's
strategy to expand directory-enabled solutions that will span from enterprise
systems management to commerce services on the Internet.
"Novell continues to demonstrate leadership in deploying robust directory
services in the marketplace," said Clive Foreman, vice president and general
manager of the Bay Networks Network Management Division of Nortel Networks.
"This relationship presents us with a significant opportunity to combine
Optivity's lead in network, IP address and policy management with the industry-leading
directory. This combination will expedite the delivery of true directory-enabled
policy management solutions."
"The trend is toward increased deployment of directory-enabled networks
by businesses and this will be accompanied by increasing demand for directory-enabled
applications," said Bob Sakakeeney, vice president of Aberdeen Group. "Novell
is the leader in advancing industry attention to the importance of the
directory in network computing."
During today's keynote addresses, two major partners discussed plans
to expand NDS-integration into their products. David R. Carlucci, general
manager of IBM S/390 division announced general availability on Feb. 26,
1999, of Novell Network Services for OS/ 390, which incorporates NDS. Karyn
Mashima, vice president of enterprise networks at Lucent Technologies,
announced the beta availability of NDS integrated into its QIP Enterprise
5.0 product line. NDS-integration into Lucent's IP address management software
expands the value of directory solutions by enabling users to manage data
on computer networks, ensure the data remains secure, reduce costs of ownership
and complexity associated with multi-vendor environments.
"Our combined technologies will significantly streamline the time required
to implement and manage IP infrastructures," said Karyn Mashima. "NDS integrated
into our QIP 5.0 product will provide a unique 'fault-intolerant' environment
to improve the delivery of IP services to the network consumer."
"The momentum around NDS is evident by the opportunities industry leaders
are pursuing with Novell in providing directory-enabled solutions in an
e-commerce world," said Christopher Stone, senior vice president of strategy
and corporate development for Novell. "More and more companies recognize
the vital role the directory plays in managing information resources, relationships,
security and identity in the Internet-enterprise environment. This is reflected
in the increased customer demand we are seeing for NDS. We currently have
more than 40 million NDS users and this number will continue to rise as
partners develop more NDS solutions."
