Novell Brings World Economic Forum to The Internet

Provides Integrated Internet Messaging Solution, Teams with Real Networks to Support Worldwide Web Casts from Annual Davos Meeting

DAVOS, Switzerland -- January 27, 1999 -- The world is coming to the 1999 Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF), thanks to Internet solutions provided by networking leader Novell, Inc. Over 1,000 chief executives, 40 heads of state and 250 senior government officials including U.S. Vice President Al Gore are among the 2,000 international V.I.P.s gathering here Jan. 28 to Feb. 1 for what is taking shape as a worldwide Internet event. Keynote addresses, plenary sessions, and new live Web Casts with the potential to reach millions of Internet users will focus on the theme of Responsible Globality: Managing the Impact of Globalization.

In support of these events, Novell will provide the assembled delegates with an Internet Business Center and full-service Internet messaging and e-mail solution. Novell Chairman and CEO Dr. Eric Schmidt will participate in a Jan. 30 panel discussion on Best Practice in Strategic Leadership. In addition, Novell and Real Networks will facilitate the first public Web Casts of WEF addresses, press conferences, and panel discussions, including the Jan. 28 opening plenary session with Al Gore and panel discussions featuring Microsoft CEO Bill Gates and other high-tech executives. Internet users can access a complete schedule and the live sessions through a special Web site at http://live99.weforum.org produced in cooperation with CNNfn Interactive.

"Networks are changing the world," said Schmidt. "The WEF is demonstrating how networks can help individuals and organizations transcend traditional boundaries and build communities of interest on a global scale. We see first hand how businesses and governments everywhere can use these same networking technologies to manage globalization."

Worldwide Messaging

For the summit, Novell is providing an easy-to-use e-mail and Internet application based on GroupWise 5, Novell's high-performance, Internet-ready collaboration solution that enables businesses to gather, access and communicate information easily from a single interface. Working in concert with other Novell products and technologies such as Novell Directory Services(R) (NDS(TM)) and NetWare(R) 5, GroupWise 5.5 provides the most scalable, reliable and powerful collaboration solution available today.

The messaging solution, accessible to delegates via information kiosks and workstations at strategic locations throughout the conference, runs on Novell's NetWare 5 server platform. The solution utilizes standard technologies such as ISDN and Internet Protocol (IP) to provide fast Internet access, offer a choice of multiple e-mail gateways and support all major Internet browsers. In addition to sending and receiving messages locally or on the Internet, delegates can access stored information for details about fellow delegates and the countries and companies they represent.

Several features of the Novell messaging solution are designed to meet the special needs of top executives and other luminaries for ease of use and airtight security. These capabilities include:

  • An advanced security system that allows users to access the system by scanning in individual identity badges
  • Fast response to user commands to retrieve or dispatch messages, regardless of the number of messages stored
  • A customized user interface that uses special color-coordinated keyboards and screen options to make sending and receiving messages easy
  • Integration with Internet e-mail (POP3) for access to e-mail from outside the summit

A special Internet Web site, designed and hosted by Novell, is also available to delegates. The Web site includes a link to up-to-date meeting information and also provides participants with links to related Web sites around the world.

During the 1998 annual meeting in Davos, Novell's messaging system handled thousands of messages reaching virtually every country on earth. Novell technicians expect an even higher level of traffic at this year's annual meeting as Internet savvy continues to permeate the top levels of business and politics.
