Novell Hosts Internet Printing Community Interoperability Testing Open Internet Printing Protocol Will Allow Standardized Printing Across Internet
Who: Novell®, Inc. is the world's leading network software provider and a key partner behind the development of an open standards-based Internet Printing Protocol (IPP).
What& When: Novell, a leader in printing on the network, continued its commitment to open standards-based networking by hosting the second IPP "bake-off," in which the printing community tested interoperability of their solutions with the Internet Printing Protocol. Twenty-five printer and software vendors attended the bake-off at Novell's Orem, Utah, campus, including Apple, AUCO, Axis, Canon, EFI, Epson, Extended Systems, Fuji Xerox, Genoa, Hewlett Packard, i-data, IBM, JCI, Komatsu, Kyocera, Lexmark, Microsoft, Netsilicon, Novell, Ricoh, Shinesoft, Sun, Tektronix and Xerox. All successfully tested their solutions with IPP. By working to deliver support for the Internet Printing Protocol for future versions of Novell Distributed Print Services (NDPS™) on NetWare®, Novell plans to strengthen its market-leading position in supporting directory-based Internet printing. At the Internet Printing Protocol bake-off last week, Novell demonstrated its IPP implementation, which marries the power of NDPS and Novell Directory Services® (NDS™) with the open standard printing protocol IPP.
Why& How: The Internet Printing Protocol will allow any user with an Internet connection to send a document to any printer that is connected to the Internet. Companies with mobile users or remote employees will be able to use printers that support IPP to easily send business materials directly to a printer instead of e-mail, fax or overnight delivery. Users of Novell's IPP implementation will also benefit from tight integration with NDPS, which enables easy management of users and printers.
