NOVELL SERVICES

CNE 10-Year Anniversary

1999 is the tenth anniversary of the Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) certification program at Novell. Today, more than 150,000 CNEs are at work around the world installing and maintaining mixed networks with Novell's leading software products. The goal of the CNE program is to educate and train IT professionals so they may support and service multi-vendor networking environments. Networked organizations have found certification provides IT employees the expertise and skill necessary to help reduce the cost of maintaining a computer network. According to International Data Corporation (IDC), more than 772,000 IT positions will be available in the U.S. in 1999, which will dramatically increase the need for qualified, trained IT professionals. The Novell CNE program is set up to aid in this worldwide effort to train network professionals by building an army of qualified Novell engineers with the skills to effectively support heterogeneous network environments in the organizations they serve.

For information about the CNE program contact Julie Hatchett at (801) 228-5073 or jahatchett@novell.com.

GROUPWARE

"Liberty" Roadmap

Novell®, Inc. today showcased the Novell Internet Messaging System (code-named "Liberty") a new Internet messaging solution that leverages the power of NDS and IP-based NetWare to improve profit margins and expand value-added service opportunities for Internet Service Providers (ISPs). By leveraging NDS and the NetWare platform, the Novell Internet Messaging System offers the most scalable and manageable messaging solution in the industry for ISPs. ISPs can distribute heavy messaging workloads across multiple servers, resulting in improved scalability and lowered overall technology costs with the Novell Internet Messaging System. At the same time, the directory benefit enables ISPs to manage multiple servers and control customer accounts from a single point of administration, resulting in lowered overall administrative costs. In addition, the directory advantage permits ISPs to expand their business and increase their profit margin by enabling them to offer the next generation of diversified services to customers such as directory-deployed software rental over the Internet. An open beta version will be available in Q2. There are no delivery dates to be announced at this time.

DIRECTORY SERVICES

NDS v. 8

Further extending its directory reach to the Internet, Novell announced the open-beta testing phase of its next-generation scalable Internet directory NDS v. 8 on March 8, 1999. Today at BrainShare, Novell demonstrated NDS v. 8 with close to one billion objects in the directory, which is nearly five times the number of users on the Internet today. NDS v. 8 eliminates the need for special-purpose Internet directories by achieving unprecedented levels of scalable performance, reliability and security. Available for the majority of enterprise network platforms, NDS now allows companies to grow their businesses without interruption and build the necessary infrastructure required for highly centralized directory applications, such as those required for electronic commerce. NDS v. 8 is expected to be available in the first half of 1999.

MANAGEMENT

ZENworks 2

Today at BrainShare, Novell announced the next generation of its industry-leading desktop management solution. ZENworks 2 will address enterprise customer needs by enabling companies to easily respond to change and optimally growth their business. By design, ZENworks makes networking effortless for end-users and makes managing and maintaining user desktops easier for network administrators. This helps businesses ensure that users can focus on business rather than technology and helps reduce the cost of owning networked PCs. ZENworks 2 continues to help address desktop Year 2000 problems with enhancements to Greenwich Mean Time's Check 2000 integration. ZENworks 2 will continue to do this with new and enhanced features such as hardware and software inventory and reporting, enhanced remote control and desktop management capabilities, "lights-out" software distribution, and criteria-based software delivery. ZENworks 2 is expected to be available in the first half of 1999 and pricing will be announced at that time.

"K2" Roadmap

Continuing its success in making networks more manageable and easier for end-users to navigate, Novell revealed plans for the evolution of its management services at BrainShare this week. Novell's management product roadmap includes next generation products, code-named "K2," which integrate the directory-based desktop management of ZENworks and the proven server management functionality of ManageWise. "K2" adds new directory-based Quality of Service (QoS) or network infrastructure management capabilities. Based on ConsoleOne, "K2" will deliver centralized administration with a single, consistent GUI, enhanced reporting for hardware and software inventory and improved mapping to allow network administrators to view the network from a variety of perspectives. In addition, "K2" will provide role-based administration based on each administrator's responsibilities. Novell expects to deliver K2 in the second half of 1999.

NT Branch Office Management Demonstration

At BrainShare this week, Novell is demonstrating how to make it easy to manage NT servers in branch offices by eliminating redundant tasks and automating NT management. The demonstration integrates NDS for NT, ZENworks, BorderManager Authentication Services and ManageWise Agent for Windows NT, bringing the management of NT branch office users, applications, security, desktops and servers to a single point of administration. This means less travel, fewer calls, and more control to manage change in corporate networks. With a consistent desktop interface, users may access network resources easily, regardless of their location. To view this and other directory-enabled product demonstrations, please stop by the Technology Lab at BrainShare.

NetWare Update

This week, Novell will reveal the roadmap for two future NetWare products code-named "6 Pack" and "Modesto." These solutions will take corporations and organizations into the next millennium with trusted, scalable, Web-based networking.

"6 Pack" will build upon the strengths of Novell's NetWare 5, the highly acclaimed pure IP server operating system that began shipping last September. "6 Pack" will provide customers with greater network performance, scalability and management by allowing all of NetWare's core networking services to be multi-processor-enabled. Novell has already seen high interest among computer hardware vendors for "6 Pack." As a major partner, Compaq® Computer Corporation will be showcasing upcoming 8-way server technology at BrainShare that will take advantage of "6 Pack's" benefits, including improved processor optimization and performance.

Modesto is Novell's next generation 64-bit server operating system designed to run on Intel's future IA-64 processor family - beginning with the Merced processor. Novell has been actively working with Intel toward the simultaneous release of Modesto with Merced's mid-2000 target date. At BrainShare, Novell will become the first vendor in the computer industry to demonstrate an application and 64-bit server operating system on a Merced software development environment.
