Novell and Dell Partner to Deliver E-Business Performance Solution

Dell to Sell Cache Appliances Based on Novell Internet Caching System

Salt Lake City, Utah, BrainShare '99 — March 22, 1999 — Novell, Inc. and Dell Computer Corporation today announced that Dell is the first computer hardware vendor to license the Novell Internet Caching Systemä. Dell will sell and factory-install Novell's Internet Caching System software with its PowerEdge line of network servers. Dell will market its PowerEdge servers with Novell's software as an Internet Caching Appliance, a computer that offloads routine work from a Web server in order to improve overall network efficiency and Web performance. Novell's Internet Caching System effectively increases the capacity of any Web server ten-fold. These performance gains enable content publishers, ISPs and enterprises to deploy high performance, content-rich Web storefronts that increase buyer satisfaction, attract new customers and drive new revenue opportunities.

According to Collaborative Research, the publishers of the 1998 Internet Caching Report, the caching market will reach $2 billion by the year 2002, with caching appliances representing 80 percent of that market.

"Dell has taken a number of significant steps to position itself for substantial growth expected in the computer appliance market, including being the first company to offer Novell Internet Caching System," said Michael Lambert, senior vice president of Dell's Enterprise Systems Group. "Businesses of all sizes can benefit from NICS with Dell PowerEdge servers in their Web environments. In addition to helping improve Web performance and overall network efficiency, the Dell/Novell caching appliance is easy to install and administer, and includes features designed to improve management, security and access to internal and external data."

"As companies implement graphic-intensive Web sites and the overall demand for Web-based content increases, caching will become necessary at every Web server and major router segment to maintain response times," said Ron Heinz, senior vice president, worldwide sales, Novell. "Novell Internet Caching System is the only solution that delivers the performance

foundation necessary for e-business. We are proud to have Dell as the first company to license Novell's Internet Caching System. Dell will be a major driver in the acceptance and adoption of Internet caching appliances."
