Novell Announces Availability of Comprehensive Directory-based Host Connectivity Solution

NetWare for SAA 4 links IBM mainframes and AS/400 systems with PC networks and the Web

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, BrainShare® '99 — March 24, 1999 — In a move to bring mainframe and AS/400 data and applications to the Web and Internet, Novell, Inc. today announced that NetWare for SAA™ 4 has completed beta testing and will begin shipping March 31, 1999. NetWare for SAA 4, developed by IBM in conjunction with Novell, is the only directory-enabled host connectivity solution for securely and reliably integrating NetWare® networks, corporate intranets and Internet applications with IBM host-based applications and data. NetWare for SAA 4 provides NetWare users with comprehensive, seamless access to IBM mainframe computers and AS/400 systems and helps IT managers better leverage their existing technology investments.

"We have worked with versions 1.3 through 3.0, and now the beta of 4.0. We found the 4.0 beta to be the most stable, easiest to configure and most feature-rich version that we have ever used. NetWare for SAA allows Fiserv and our clients to focus on TCP/IP-based networks, while using development APIs designed for the SNA world," said Randy Woods, network services manager at Fiserv, the world's largest financial data processor. "Combining the IP support that has been in NetWare for SAA since version 2.0, with the pure IP capabilities of NetWare 5.0, allows us to roll out an extremely modern, highly capable network connectivity solution."

NetWare for SAA 4 was designed to take advantage of NetWare 5, the number one network for Internet-enabled businesses, delivering industry-leading TCP/IP support and enhanced security. This latest version includes comprehensive integration with Novell Directory Services® (NDS™) providing centralized, single point administration of an organization's entire host connectivity infrastructure.

"Ensuring that our customers can exploit the strengths of NetWare 5 for host connectivity was our focus in developing this version of NetWare for SAA," said John Slitz, senior vice president of marketing, Novell. "Delivering pure IP and tighter integration with NDS in NetWare for SAA 4 directly reduces administration costs and simplifies end user access for businesses needing to integrate the NetWare and IBM environments."

"Due to rapidly growing Web and Internet business requirements, customers are faced with the challenge of integrating enterprise host applications and data with an ever increasing number of users both within and outside their organizations," commented Dr. James Neiser, vice president of marketing, Network Computing Software, IBM. "By providing comprehensive host connectivity in NetWare for SAA 4, IBM and Novell are enabling secure access to mission-critical applications — in any network environment."

New Features in NetWare for SAA 4

NetWare for SAA 4 has also been enhanced to include trial versions of Novell's HostPublisher™, IBM's Host On-Demand and Personal Communications v4.3 software packages to assist customers in evaluating the latest in web-to-host software offerings from the two companies. According to International Data Corporation, the web-to-host connectivity market is predicted to grow to $1 billion by the year 2002.

  • IBM Host On-Demand — Secure browser access to host data and applications, Host On-Demand is a 100% pure Java application that provides IBM TN3270, TN5250 and VT 52/100/240 terminal emulation as well as extensive Java-based customization capabilities.
  • Novell NetWare HostPublisher — NetWare server-based software that permits authorized users to access applications and data on IBM mainframes through corporate intranets, extranets or the Internet using a web browser. Novell Host Publisher dynamically translates mainframe data streams into Web pages and sends user data entries back to the host application.
  • IBM Personal Communications v4.3 — Full function communications package providing access to IBM mainframe and AS/400 applications for Windows 95/98 and NT desktops.

Other significant new components in NetWare for SAA 4 include:

  • Industry standard Secure Sockets Layer v3.0 (SSL) encryption for secure communication over the Internet and corporate intranets
  • Comprehensive TCP/IP support including value-added gateway services such as load balancing and rollover for AS/400 and mainframe connectivity, providing more reliable host access and simplified network management
  • Support for IBM's Enterprise Extender with High Performance Routing (HPR) over TCP/IP providing direct IP connections to host applications without losing SNA performance management and reliability features.
  • Integration with IBM's Tivoli TME enterprise management system offering improved event reporting and management
