Novell Announces Beta Availability of Novell Cluster Services

Novell Cluster Services for NetWare 5 Dramatically Increases Application Availability

PROVO, Utah — March 31, 1999 — Novell®, Inc. today announced the open beta availability of directory-enabled Novell Cluster Services for NetWare® 5, which provides highly available access to mission-critical data for e-business storefronts and other transaction-oriented industries, and reduces the risk and cost of unplanned downtime due to hardware or software failures. The multi-node cluster solution leverages Novell Directory Services® (NDS™) to improve manageability of clustered resources within the enterprise network. Used in conjunction with NetWare 5, Novell's powerful platform for conducting Internet-enabled business, Novell Cluster Services ensures that customers can reliably make e-business transactions or access network resources anywhere and anytime.

Novell Cluster Services uses shared disk array technology to reduce downtime by allowing other server nodes in the cluster to take over services and applications from failed servers. If a clustered server fails, applications running on that server are automatically restarted on another server in the cluster. Users attached to a clustered server that fails are transparently migrated to another server in the cluster. International Data Corporation reports that the clustering services market will grow to over $1 billion in 2002. At its annual BrainShare conference last week, Novell demonstrated two 12-node cluster services configurations running on the NetWare 5 Internet operating system and servers from clustering partners Compaq and Hewlett-Packard respectively.

"Novell Cluster Services dramatically increases the availability of Web and Internet application servers and transparently migrates Internet applications and users from a failed server to other servers in the cluster," said Michael Bryant, director of marketing, Novell. "By providing a solution that ensures Internet applications will always be available, Novell continues to provide solutions that form the intelligent infrastructure of e-business on the Web."

Novell Cluster Services NDS Integration and Features

Novell Cluster Services directly leverages NDS by storing all cluster configuration information within the directory. Instead of using scripts to determine the response to a server failure, cluster services uses NDS to store and distribute failover scenario information, which is available through the directory to all servers in the cluster. Additional features in Novell Cluster Services include:

  • Multi-node — provides support for more than two nodes in a cluster. Working with Compaq and Hewlett-Packard, Novell recently demonstrated two 12-node cluster configurations at its annual BrainShare conference.
  • Application Fan out — allows the distribution of applications on failed servers to any number of other servers in the cluster
  • Application Fan in — allows the concentration of critical applications from multiple server failures onto a smaller number of surviving servers to maintain critical application support in the face of catastrophic server failures
  • Auto re-connect — automatic, transparent migration of IP-based clients from failed servers to surviving servers within the cluster
  • Management — uses Novell's ConsoleOne Java management tool for administration

Availability

Novell Cluster Services for NetWare 5 is currently available for beta testing. Customers can download this open beta version from Novell's Web site at http://support.novell.com/beta/public/.
