Novell Takes Best-of-Comdex Honors in Internet, Enterprise Categories

New Internet Caching System and Directory-Enabled ZENworks Earn Best-of-Breed Distinction

PROVO, Utah — April 21, 1999 — Novell®, Inc. today announced that two of its leading networking products have received PC Week Best of Comdex Awards given to ten elite solutions selected among several hundred introduced at this week's Comdex Spring '99 trade show in Chicago. Novell's new Internet Caching System™ won Best-of-Comdex in the Internet and Network Software category, and Novell's ZENworks™ desktop management solution was named Best-of-Comdex in the Enterprise Software Category.

These top honors reflect the breadth and best-of-breed quality of new Novell products introduced over the past year to help customers manage, control and increase the performance of their networks. Novell Directory Services® (NDS™), the directory-enabled NetWare® 5 platform, and related solutions such as the Novell Internet Caching System and ZENworks extend the value of the enterprise and the Internet by bridging the gap between them.

"These latest industry awards confirm that Novell products enable customers to integrate and manage the complete range of computer platforms, applications, services and devices distributed across today's heterogeneous business networks and the Internet," said Ed McGarr, Novell's vice president of product marketing. "Solutions like the Novell Internet Caching System and ZENworks give businesses total control of their private networks and the Internet, reducing the bottom-line costs of network management while adding top-line value in the form of new applications and e-business activities."

Novell Internet Caching System

Announced recently at BrainShare '99, the Novell Internet Caching System is a scalable, plug-and-accelerate caching appliance architecture available for license by Intel architecture-based OEMs. Novell's Internet Caching System, with its new cache object store, dramatically improves the speed and efficiency of delivering Internet content to employees, business partners and customers within corporate intranets and extranets as well as across the Internet. Novell's Internet Caching System can accelerate any Web site up to ten times the performance of common Web servers, host over 100,000 persistent connections, and dramatically reduce the time and expense of scaling traffic across multiple Web servers.

"Novell's Internet Caching System puts powerful caching capabilities into a streamlined application device, improving Internet performance for corporate users," stated PC Week. "Novell has also taken the simple but very valuable step of allowing users to put the caching system in front of a corporate Web server, greatly improving Web site performance without having to invest in expensive caching and traffic-management servers."

ZENworks 2.0

Short for Zero Effort Networks for users, ZENworks automates desktop management using the power of Novell Directory Services to remotely provide application management, software distribution, desktop management and workstation maintenance. ZENworks minimizes the time users and network administrators must devote to workstation management: administrators are free to concentrate on more critical issues, and end users can have confidence in their workstation setup.

"Novell's ZENworks 2.0 takes desktop management to the next level through directory-enabling technology," stated PC Week. "ZENworks' flexible architecture makes it a one-stop shop for application distribution, policy management and software metering."

Best-of-Comdex Awards

At the Spring and Fall Comdex trade shows, PC Week Labs analysts and Corporate Partners choose the best new products from among the hundreds introduced. PC Week Corporate Partners — a group of IS professionals from commercial, nonprofit and government organizations — team with Labs analysts to identify the best, most innovative technology in a number of product categories.
