Novell and Foundry Networks Announce Internet Web Caching Partnership

Joint Development, Sales and Marketing Efforts Deliver Leading Web Caching Solution to Enterprises and ISPs

BALTIMORE, ISPCON Exhibition and Conference — April 27, 1999 — Foundry Networks™, the leading provider of award-winning Gigabit Ethernet switching, routing, server load balancing and transparent caching solutions, and Novell®, Inc. (NASDAQ: NOVL), the world's leading provider of directory-enabled networking software, today announced a joint development, marketing and sales alliance to provide leading price/performance Web caching solutions, combining Foundry's industry leading ServerIron switch and Novell's top performance Internet Caching System™.

The companies are working together to provide enterprises and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) a leading caching solution to meet the demands of today's Internet-connected world. Foundry's ServerIron switch used in conjunction with Novell's Internet Caching System provides customers with unparalleled service availability, performance, scalability and cost savings. At the ISPCON trade show in Baltimore in April 1999, Foundry and Novell will demonstrate a transparent Web caching solution, which is available immediately. Foundry Networks and Novell will actively engage in joint sales and marketing efforts as well as work closely to develop joint solutions to continue to enhance product functionality, reliability and compatibility.

NetConstruct, based Studio City, Calif., is a leading Internet design and architecture firm with unparalleled experience in national and global TCP/IP networking. "We deliver the fastest and most reliable networks in the industry, and the Foundry/Novell combination falls among our highest-rated equipment pairing and stands up admirably to our stringent production demands," said Martin Leufray III, CEO of NetConstruct. "We feel confident in recommending the Foundry/Novell transparent caching solution to our customers because of the exceptional product performance and support we have received from both companies. With the Foundry/Novell transparent caching solution properly configured, there is no need to change each user's browser, so the solution is easy to maintain. Most importantly, the cache delivers a significant improvement in the end user's perceived Web performance."

Collaborative Research, based in Los Altos, Calif., the publishers of the 1998 Internet Caching Report, estimate the caching market will grow to $2 billion in 2002. "Foundry has positioned themselves as the price/performance leader among the cache director vendors, and with their recent announcement of the Internet Caching System and partnerships with Dell and Compaq, Novell is pretty clearly aiming at the same position among the cache vendors," noted Peter Christy, principal of Collaborative Research. "Each company offers excellent products in their own respect, and as partners, their positions align extremely well. The combined offering is exciting and highlights the rapid evolution in the caching market."

Novell Internet Caching System

Announced in March 1999 at BrainShare, Novell's annual developer's conference, the Novell Internet Caching System is a scalable, plug-and-accelerate caching appliance architecture available for license by Intel architecture-based OEMs. Novell's Internet Caching System effectively increases the capacity of any Web server ten-fold, which enables content publishers, ISPs and enterprises to deploy high-performance, content-rich Web storefronts that increase buyer satisfaction, attract new customers, and drive new revenue opportunities. Both Compaq Computer Corporation and Dell Computer Corporation have licensed the Internet Caching System and announced their intent to deliver multiple ICS-based cache appliance solutions to the marketplace.

"Caching has become a fundamental technology for telecommunications companies and carrier-class service providers. As companies implement increasingly complex Web sites, the performance and reliability of the Internet becomes crucial to provide customers with the responsiveness they demand," said Smita Deshpande, director of marketing, Novell Internet products. "By partnering with leading switch vendors such as Foundry Networks we can together provide our customers with end-to-end Web performance solutions that serve as the foundation for e-business."

Foundry ServerIron Platform

Foundry's ServerIron provides ISPs and enterprises with high-performance Layer 4-7 switching that improves the availability, performance and scalability of Internet services such as content publishing, Web hosting and e-commerce. ServerIron and Foundry's Internet IronWare suite of advanced features allow enterprises and ISPs to deploy server load balancing and transparent cache switching capabilities concurrently. This protects users' investment in the ServerIron platform and provides maximum flexibility. ServerIron is deployed as a front end to the Web cache and redirects Web traffic. The ServerIron transparently intercepts these packets and switches them to a configured Internet Caching System while sending non-Web traffic direct through the switch onto the router/gateway to the Internet.

"The Novell Internet Caching System is a world class Web caching system which integrates some of Novell's best innovations such as high-performance cache object store and fault tolerance disk management capabilities," said Ken Cheng, vice president of product and program management, Foundry Networks, Inc. "Together, we will be providing a world class Web caching solution which gives our customers unprecedented reliability, performance, scalability and cost savings."
