Novell Announces Beta of Novell Small Business Suite 5

Novell Small Business Suite 5 Provides Customers with Full Range of Novell Network Solutions

LAS VEGAS (NetWorld+Interop) — May 11, 1999 — Showing its continued commitment to small businesses, Novell, Inc. today announced the beta of Novell® Small Business Suite 5. Building on the success of previous versions of NetWare® for Small Business, Novell Small Business Suite 5 delivers the reliability and scalabilty of NetWare 5 along with the manageability of GroupWise® 5.5. This enhanced release of Novell's easy-to-use network server platform for small companies enables businesses to get the most out of their internal networks and the Internet by including all of the software needed to run and intelligently grow a network. Additionally, the suite is more affordable to own, easier to manage and easier to use than any other network solution for small businesses.

"NetWare 5 has been a huge success for our large customers. Novell Small Business Suite 5, now with NetWare 5, provides all the networking services my small business customers are looking for," said Marc Leeka, president of Computer Physicians in Glendale, Calif. "If the shipping product is like the beta I have been testing, Novell has a real winner."

"Novell Small Business Suite 5 provides our small business customers with a full range of networking solutions that they can easily manage and administer on their own," said John Slitz, senior vice president of marketing at Novell. "We think our customers will appreciate having one integrated solution that satisfies nearly every business networking software need that they have. And because small businesses often times become larger businesses, Novell Small Business Suite 5 provides our customers with the flexibility they need to grow their networks as their companies grow."

The Latest Networking Solutions

Novell has upgraded several components of its small business solution with version 5 that will provide small businesses with the same powerful tools found in large, corporate organizations while providing the ease of use needed to manage and administer networks in a small business. In addition, users have the flexibility to add user licenses to their network in as many or few increments as they want up to a maximum of 50 total users.

Included in Novell Small Business Suite 5:

  • NetWare 5 — The pure IP-based server operating system for Internet-enabled businesses combines the reliability and scalability of the traditional NetWare network with the global reach and open standards of the Internet. NetWare 5 includes the power of Novell Directory Services™ (NDS™), bringing unequaled performance, reliability and scalability to networks everywhere.
  • GroupWise 5.5 Novell's premier collaboration solution allows small companies to leverage the Internet for everyday business use and to improve the efficiency of work processes, whether sending e-mail, setting up meetings or collaborating on projects.
  • BorderManager FastCache™ Services 3 - Increases productivity by speeding up the connection to the Internet and reducing network bandwidth requirements.
  • ZENworks™ Starter Pack 1.1 - Lets companies configure, update and maintain all network workstations from a single workstation.
  • Netscape Enterprise Server for NetWare - A high-performance Web and application server based on open standards. It enables organizations to manage and publish information to the Internet and deploy network-centric applications throughout an intranet.

Novell Small Business Suite 5 also includes an integrated set of necessary network solutions for faxing with Tobit FaxWare 5.11, anti-virus protection from Network Associates with VirusScan and Netshield, database applications with a 5-user version of Oracle8, easy Web site management and dynamic Web publishing from NetObjects Fusion 3.0 and several other helpful solutions.

Making Networking Easier

Novell realizes that only 14 percent of small businesses have a full-time IT staff, so networks for this market have to be easy to administer, manage and configure. With this in mind, Novell provides Novell Small Business Suite customers with:

  • Novell Internet Connection Expert ¾ A graphical wizard that runs from the administrator's workstation walks customers or resellers through the process of connecting to the Internet. This wizard configures the Multi-protocol Router and connects the server to the Internet.
  • Novell Easy Administration ToolTM (NEAT) ¾ An updated version of NEAT integrates QuickTasks or automated wizards for simplifying administrative tasks such as first time network set up, adding users, printers and groups.
  • "Express" and "Custom" Installations¾ Small Business Suite 5 has two installation options, an Express installation that asks simple questions automating the process, or a Custom installation providing complete flexibility.
  • Upgrade Wizard ¾ Novell Small Business Suite 5 includes an upgrade wizard to assist small businesses running on NetWare 3 to easily upgrade their systems to NetWare 5.
