Lucent Technologies Expands Support for Novell's Directory, Bringing NDS to Voice Networks

Novell Directory Services and Lucent's Market-leading DEFINITY System to Accelerate Convergence of Voice and Data

LAS VEGAS (NetWorld+Interop) — May 11, 1999 — Taking another step in advancing the development of directory-enabled networking solutions, Novell®, Inc. announced Lucent Technologies will support Novell Directory Services® (NDS™) via standards with Lucent's DEFINITY® Directory Solutions. When available, this will allow NDS to manage both data and voice services, simplifying and enhancing management of DEFINITY Enterprise Communications Server. This development will enable network management and administration to be centered around one common entity ¾ the user's identity. Today at NetWorld+Interop, Lucent will demonstrate NDS with its DEFINITY products, showing how customers can reduce the complexity and redundancy of running corporate voice and data networks.

"Lucent is leading the industry in voice and data networking and continues to demonstrate the importance of the directory with its succession of directory-related initiatives. Lucent, the leader in enterprise communications systems, is improving its own networking solutions by utilizing NDS," said Chris Stone, senior vice president of corporate strategy and development for Novell. "This announcement is a continuation of third-party support that further validates NDS and demonstrates that Novell is a catalyst for data and voice convergence."

Lucent was the first in a series of network communications vendors to publicly support NDS and work with Novell to develop directory-enabled network products. In October 1998, both companies announced their commitment to jointly accelerate the development of networking standards and integrate NDS with Lucent's high-capacity Cajun P550 Switch via RealNet Rules. This capability is scheduled to be delivered in the next couple of months.

Subsequently, Lucent announced NDS integration with Lucent's QIP Enterprise 5.0 product line in January 1999. This new product is currently in the beta-testing phase. Today, Lucent is once again extending its support for NDS with its DEFINITY system product line, the market-leading premises business communications system. Later this year, Novell plans to conduct a trial at its headquarters of Lucent's directory-enabled solution with NDS.

"Novell is an industry leader with the technology that works dynamically to bring together both the voice and data environments," said Carl Wiese, general manager, Enterprise Multimedia Solutions, Lucent. "Lucent looks forward to working together with Novell to help deliver a rich platform of solutions that will help simplify the management of customer networks."

With directory and voice integration, customers will notice simplified network management and lower cost of administration. In addition, by adding voice to the mix, Novell will help provide customers with a single point of administration for all network user identities, devices, data and voice, connecting each user to the data and communications tools they need. An organization's voice network contains more users than any other database and by combining the voice network with NDS the directory becomes more valuable. This type of integration between NDS and a voice network will make activities such as application roll outs faster and easier since all user data is in one place.
