Novell Delivers Highly Scalable Enterprise Directory for E-Commerce

New Integrated Directory Offering Will Give Customers Choice of Network Platform

NICE, France (BrainShare Europe '99) — May 18, 1999 — Novell®, Inc. today announced the availability of Novell Directory Services® (NDS™) 8 — the full-service Internet directory solution that allows businesses to build the infrastructure needed for e-commerce. The scalable performance and proven replication capabilities of NDS 8 make it the only appropriate directory service for centralized, Internet and highly distributed enterprise applications. Internal tests show NDS 8 has the ability to store and manage at least one billion objects — hundreds of millions more than competing directories and earlier versions of NDS. Already deployed and proven as an enterprise directory with over 50 million users, NDS now allows companies to solve their immediate needs, grow their businesses without disruption, and build the necessary infrastructure for e-commerce.

At BrainShare Europe '99, Novell also revealed its plans to ship an NDS bundle later this year. This integrated NDS offering will allow customers, for the first time, to purchase NDS independently from NetWare® and benefit from the world's leading directory solution on their platform of choice. With the NDS bundle, customers who do not have NetWare in their environment can still implement an out-of-the-box foundation for e-commerce based on NDS 8. This not only opens new markets for Novell, but also lets companies integrate their multiple server operating systems. Pricing for the NDS bundle will be based on a per-user charge. The bundle is expected to include NDS 8, NDS for NT, NDS for Solaris and a five-user runtime version of NetWare 5. More details on the content and pricing for this cross-platform directory solution will be announced at a later date.

"NDS 8 is primed to position Novell as the undisputed leader in providing the best and most scalable directory solution for integrating enterprise systems and managing your supply chain and e-business relationships," said Chris Stone, senior vice president of strategy and corporate development for Novell. "In addition, the NDS bundle brings us closer to our vision of NDS ubiquity across all network platforms. This will enhance the implementation of an identity-enabled directory, where companies can create business opportunities that utilize user identity information in establishing a more personal experience for their customers."

"NDS 8 is an important step forward in Novell's directory strategy," said Jamie Lewis, president of The Burton Group. "With native LDAP support and improved scalability, NDS 8 broadens the number and types of roles that NDS can play in an organization's directory architecture. In addition to NOS administration, NDS can now play an important role for companies that are looking to set up Internet applications."

Building the Infrastructure for E-Commerce

Leveraging the proven capabilities of Novell's leading enterprise directory technology, NDS 8 helps customers conduct business on the Internet by achieving unprecedented levels of scalable performance, reliability and security. NDS 8 also furthers Novell's vision of providing a digital landscape where the individual is the focal point. Since NDS is the only directory service that integrates the entire network around an individual, it provides the foundation for building a more personalized, secure network.

In addition, NDS 8 natively supports the directory standard Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) version 3 and is ideally suited to power LDAP applications. Because NDS 8 is standards-based, it can easily interoperate with an organization's existing technology investments. The standards-based infrastructure of NDS 8 also gives administrators easy, flexible central control over an organization's security policies, making it the best choice for evolving and varied security needs.

"At MT&T, we are planning to use NDS 8 as the foundation of our application service business," said Monty Sharma, chief technology officer at Maritime Telegraph and Telephone. "As an application service provider, we're going to rely on NDS 8 to manage a large and growing number of users and deliver reliable service over the Internet. The directory is really key to e-business, and NDS is clearly the leader in that space."
