City of Toronto Standardizes on Novell GroupWise for Electronic Messaging

BEI/Metastorm Workflow Package Also Gains Widespread Approval from North America's Fifth Largest City

PROVO, Utah — May 27, 1999 — Novell®, Inc. has announced the City of Toronto has selected Novell GroupWise® 5.5, Novell's premier collaboration product for corporate networks and intranets, as its standard electronic messaging platform. Novell GroupWise will enable the City of Toronto to provide its 40,000 employees with a secure, cost-effective and easy-to-manage method to gather, access and communicate information easily from a single interface.

The City of Toronto will also standardize on e-work, BEI/Metastorm's workflow software that enables business users to easily design and manage automated business processes on networked PCs.

"Before the City of Toronto amalgamated to form a unified and more efficient governing body, the seven municipalities were using a variety of different electronic messaging platforms," said Jim Andrew, Executive Director and Chief Information Officer, City of Toronto. "By standardizing on a single, stable, high-performance and Internet-ready solution like GroupWise, we are able to simplify the communication process, increase employee productivity and move towards our ultimate goal of a paperless office."

Toronto, North America's fifth largest city in terms of population (2.4 million people), has been voted consistently as a Top Ten North American city for business and as a leading international city for work and family. For the past two years, Swiss-based Corporate Resource Group (CRG) has named Toronto as one of the cities with the best quality of life in the world. Toronto houses the third largest stock exchange in North America and has been dubbed Silicon Valley North for its high concentration of information technology companies.

Toronto's restructuring of its municipal government on Jan. 1, 1998, was one of the most ambitious government undertakings in North America. The amalgamation combined seven large municipalities, revamped municipal and provincial responsibilities, and reformed the property tax system. Today the City of Toronto, headed by Mayor Mel Lastman and 57 city councillors, operates on a $5.6 billion annual budget.

More than 126 companies were invited to bid on the electronic messaging and workflow proposal, issued by the City of Toronto in October 1998. Novell GroupWise was deemed most suitable in terms of its wide industry acceptance, price/performance, encryption capabilities and ease-of-management capabilities. It will also enhance the City of Toronto's electronic commerce capabilities.

"We are excited to be chosen to provide our 'megacity' with a standardized electronic messaging system," said Don Chapman, Vice President and General Manager, Novell Canada Ltd. "The installation of GroupWise City-wide will provide the fifth largest government in Canada with an easy-to-use Internet-ready and enterprise communications platform. This implementation provides the City with a comprehensive solution at significantly less overall cost than other alternatives. GroupWise offers the highest level of service to the users combined with ultimate ease of management for IS staff. The scalability of GroupWise and Novell Directory Services® (NDS™) will allow the City to continue to grow in both users and efficiency — all with the end result of faster and more cost-effective service delivery for Toronto residents."

Along with GroupWise, e-work was selected for its simplicity and user-friendliness. e-work mimics business procedures by using the concept of an electronic folder in which pages of information are placed. These folders are passed electronically from person to person as users complete procedure stages. Procedures are designed in the e-work graphical designer and folders are created and accessed with e-work client software.

"By combining e-work with GroupWise, City of Toronto employees will experience increased productivity, increased return-on-investment and enhanced transaction capabilities," said Erick Roy, Canadian Sales Manager, BEI/Metastorm Canada Ltd. Ottawa. "We are delighted to be working together with the City of Toronto and Novell on this exciting project."

Initially, GroupWise will be implemented on approximately 18,000 desktops for the City's corporate departments, agencies and boards when the project goes live in August 1999, and will eventually accommodate 40,000 seats.
