Novell Announces 'Directory-enabled' Logo Program for NDS-compatible Applications

Free Software Testing for Compatibility with Novell Directory Services 8

PROVO, Utah — June 8, 1999 — Novell, Inc., the world's leading provider of directory-enabled networking software and services, today announced it is naming qualified software and hardware products from outside developers — including LDAP applications — as "Directory-enabled," meaning they are compatible with the newest version of Novell® Directory Services®, NDS™ 8. As with Novell's "Yes, Tested and Approved" logo program, "Directory-enabled" products pass rigorous compatibility tests to assure users they will operate seamlessly with NDS 8.

"Directory-enabled" products will capitalize on the soaring use of NDS in networks and the Internet. Customers will be able to easily identify Novell's "Directory-enabled" logo, signifying compatibility between NDS and qualified products. Companies can also benefit by participating in Novell's wide range of co-marketing opportunities available to "Yes, Tested and Approved" and "Directory-enabled" partners.

"NDS compatibility testing is exciting news for both Novell and independent software and hardware vendors," said Scott Wells, director of Novell Developer Services. "We expect that as NDS 8 takes a greater foothold in the Internet marketplace, a large number of developers will seek NDS compatibility, similar to the thousands who have done so previously with NetWare® and other Novell products."

Novell's "Yes, Tested and Approved" logo helps the company's millions of customers around the world easily identify and purchase third-party hardware and software products that are proven to be compatible with the Novell product line. Novell's "Directory-enabled" logo indicates specific compatibility with NDS 8.

To test products to the "Directory-enabled" standard, developers can take them to a Novell Authorized Testing Center (NATC), or they can register over the Internet at http://developer.novell.com/prodcert. And for a limited time, Novell is offering NDS compatibility testing of software applications for free.

One of the first to receive Novell "Directory-enabled" approval, High Technology Software Corporation (HiTecSoft) in Scottsdale, Ariz., believes directory services will bring a whole new paradigm to the Internet in both security and digital persona, said Sean Moshir, president and CEO of HiTecSoft. "HiTecSoft's WebConsole product, which is the leading Web-based, directory-enabled server management utility, seamlessly integrates with NDS 8 and is 'Directory-enabled,' thus enabling users to leverage the capabilities of directory services. We will continue to support Novell's emerging technologies," Moshir said.

Dirk Smith, CEO of Alexander LAN based in Nashua, N.H., said, "Directory-enabled" compatibility not only promotes partnership between his company and Novell, but also ensures the smooth operation of the Alexander SPK (Server Protection Kit) as it enhances system uptime. "The development of NDS to its current maturity has ensured that millions of servers can be accessed and managed incredibly easily and at a remarkably low cost. This has encouraged an increase in the number of users per server, and the Alexander SPK's NDS compatibility helps us create powerful and reliable directory-enabled server environments," Smith said.

NDS is a multiple-platform, distributed database that stores information about the hardware and software resources available on a network. NDS 8 provides developers with a cross-platform management and security infrastructure for intranet and Internet applications, including the advanced control of user access and identity required for customized Internet and e-commerce services. Over 50 million users rely on NDS to manage and secure their applications and platforms of choice, adding new Web-based applications and activities to their businesses while dramatically reducing the cost and complexity of network administration and management.
