Novell Moves Millions of Customers Toward Y2K Compliance

Novell Solutions Help 33 Million Customers Check for Y2K Compliance

PROVO, Utah — June 14, 1999 — Two hundred days before the Year 2000, Novell announced it has assisted more than a third of the company's customer base check for Y2K compliance of Novell products throughout the world. Through the use of Novell's directory-based ZENworks™, Greenwich Mean Time's Check 2000, and Novell's free Y2K Information Ferret® tool, more than 33 million customers have validated the status of their NetWare® networks since December 1998. In addition, Novell has assisted customers in updating more than 200,000 servers with free Year 2000 updates from Novell's Web site.

The free Y2K Information Ferret tool allows customers to check all of their organization's servers for Novell products. After identifying Novell products, the Ferret tool saves data obtained from customer servers and provides a detailed report, complete with Year 2000 status and available updates for Novell products that are not in Year 2000 compliance. In most cases, customers are provided with a detailed report from Novell within 24 hours after using the Ferret tool on their servers. Customers interested in downloading the Y2K Information Ferret tool can find it at http://www.novell.com/year2000/y2kferret.html.

"Novell made it very easy for me to check the Y2K status of all of my NetWare servers," said Richard Haynal, network administrator for the Washington State Hospital Association. "After downloading the Ferret tool from Novell's Web site, I ran the utility on my servers and was provided with all the information I needed to make my Novell products Y2K ready. I wish every software and hardware vendor provided these types of tools."

Novell also offers two additional tools, Check 2000 and ZENworks (see today's related Novell release), to help customers in the fight against the Year 2000 problem. Check 2000, from Greenwich Mean Time, is a Windows product that checks PCs for Y2K risks. It analyzes five levels of the Y2K problem: hardware (BIOS), operating systems, software programs, data and data sharing. ZENworks ships with a 5-user version of Check 2000, and additional licenses can be purchased through Novell. Based on Novell® Directory Services® (NDS™), ZENworks is a desktop management solution that provides personalized software distribution, policy-based workstation management and remote control to make using Windows-based PCs and thin clients easier for end-users while reducing costly maintenance and troubleshooting tasks for administrators.

Directory-enabled ZENworks, together with Check 2000, identifies and alerts network administrators to potential Year 2000-related issues on the desktop and assists them in repairing problems by pushing manufacturer's recommended solutions or other fixes to all network desktops and resources. The combination of these two products provides a powerful solution that will help businesses assess their networks for Year 2000 issues, deploy Year 2000-ready products and apply appropriate fixes to ease the transition into the next millennium. A new 5-user version of Check 2000 will begin shipping with the next version of ZENworks.

Karl Feilder, president and CEO of Greenwich Mean Time, said, "Novell has taken a more responsible approach to the Year 2000 problem than any other IT vendor. Novell was very quick to recognize the Year 2000 challenge and responded by creating a compliant upgrade path for NetWare. They then met the remaining challenge of delivering Year 2000 solutions to the desktop by deploying Check 2000 through their own delivery system, ZENworks. None of Novell's 80 million customers worldwide has any excuse for going into the Year 2000 unprepared."
