Novell NetWare Enterprise Print Services Takes Network Printing to a New Level

Directory-enabled Application Leverages Open Internet Standards to Simplify Printing, Save Businesses Time and Money

PROVO, Utah — June 29, 1999 — Novell, Inc. today announced the availability of NetWare® Enterprise Print Services, an advanced software solution that uses Novell® Directory Services® (NDS™) to give users access to printers from anywhere on the network and administrators total control of print resources distributed across private networks and the Internet. NetWare Enterprise Print Services supports Internet standards and works with printer hardware from the world's leading vendors, enabling customers to integrate their business networks and the Internet into a single intelligent network that is secure, easy to manage and easy to use.

In keeping with Novell's commitment to manage and integrate the widest range of network resources, NetWare Enterprise Print Services ships with gateway software to support printer hardware from Hewlett-Packard, Xerox, Lexmark, Epson, Tektronix and Extended Systems. For detailed support, see the partner quote sheet at http://www.novell.com/products/printing/quotes.html. In addition, customers can print from a variety of clients, including Windows, Unix, Macintosh and all clients supporting Internet Printing Protocol (IPP).

Using Novell Distributed Print Services™ (NDPS®) technology — developed jointly by Novell, HP and Xerox — NetWare Enterprise Print Services expands the printing services of Novell's NetWare 4 and NetWare 5 server platforms and frees users from the boundaries of technology and geography that have traditionally limited the reach and effectiveness of network printing. For example, when using NetWare Enterprise Print Services, installing a new network printer is as easy as plugging it into the network. Once a printer is connected and powered on, it immediately becomes available for network printing. And when a new printer is added, users no longer have to hunt down the right print driver because NetWare Enterprise Print Services will automatically download it to their desktops. NetWare Enterprise Print Services also allows users to be notified automatically when events or problems occur, such as a completed print job, low toner or a paper jam.

"NetWare Enterprise Print Services is the most stable and reliable network printing product we've ever worked with — providing virtually transparent, error-free printing to our 50 network printers," said John Buskirk, IS manager of Bright Wood Corporation. "Not only does NetWare Enterprise Print Services virtually eliminate the printing problems we used to encounter, but it also saves us time and money by allowing our employees to tackle more important issues than whether or not they'll be able to print."

Support of Internet Standards

NetWare Enterprise Print Services is designed to help customers leverage the power of the Internet by supporting open Internet standards. The protocol independence of NDPS enables NetWare Enterprise Print Services to run in pure native Internet Protocol (IP) networks, pure IPX/SPX networks or a combination of both.

"As businesses grow, they need the kind of network that can grow with them," said Michael Bryant, director of marketing for Novell. "By supporting Internet standards and allowing users to print from clients that support IPP, NetWare Enterprise Print Services provides for that growth and also reduces the complexity and cost associated with managing printers in common and mixed network environments."

Reliability and Security

NetWare Enterprise Print Services gives customers an intelligent printing infrastructure that helps them stay ahead of potential network printing problems, so they can continuously keep all network printing resources up and running. Its tight integration with Novell Directory Services makes printer management easier by enabling administrators to control their network-printing environment from one location. NetWare Enterprise Print Services also takes full advantage of the robust security capabilities of NDS, allowing control of individual user access to printing resources.
