Novell Launches Marketing Campaign During SENIOR PGA's Novell Utah Showdown

Novell's Sponsorship Attracts One of the Best Fields of SENIOR PGA Players Assembled This Year

PARK CITY, Utah — July 30, 1999 — Novell, Inc. today unveiled a marketing program centered around its new sponsorship of the Novell Utah Showdown. The marketing campaign, highlighted by Novell's four-year title sponsorship of the event, includes the opportunity to host and meet with a number of customers and strategic partners. Corporate guests of Novell at this year's tournament include Compaq, Cisco, Intel, IBM and Lucent, among many others.

Novell's sponsorship helped to draw some of golf's greatest legends to the tournament. Today's opening groupings include the threesome of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino, playing together for what may be one of the last times in a SENIOR PGA setting. Other notable players include last year's tournament winner Dr. Gil Morgan, Dave Stockton, Bruce Summerhays and Hale Irwin, who is making his first appearance in Park City. Tournament officials are anticipating in excess of 40,000 spectators to witness the event live at the Jack Nicklaus designed course at Park Meadows Country Club.

"Incorporating Novell's name and identity with a premier sporting experience gives us a great opportunity to build market and brand awareness targeted to our key audiences," said John Slitz, Novell senior vice president, global marketing. "Novell, and our customers and partners, the State of Utah and the SENIOR PGA, all benefit from our sponsorship of the Novell Utah Showdown."

It was Novell who came forward as the tournament's title sponsor in March of this year, when it appeared that the SENIOR PGA would be forced to move the tournament to another state for lack of a corporate sponsor. Novell, based in Provo, Utah, seized the opportunity to support its local community while at the same time increasing its brand awareness on a global scale.

"This event is a unique opportunity to conduct business while attending a world-class sporting competition," said Jim Herrmann, Icon Health and Fitness. "It was a great opportunity to meet with Novell executives, build upon our relationship and watch some of golf's greatest players compete."

A component of the marketing program includes Novell's entry into the world of television advertising. The company's television commercial will premier today and run throughout the three days of ESPN's live coverage of the golf tournament. The 30-second spot, created under the direction of Novell's worldwide advertising department, highlights the company's leading role in the Internet marketplace and networking technologies. The commercial will also be available on Novell's Web site (www.novell.com) following its international debut.
