Novell GroupWise-Novell Internet Messaging System Bundle Solves Collaboration Challenges for Education Customers

New Bundle Offers Web-based Tools to Meet Faculty's Collaboration and Students' Messaging Needs

PROVO, Utah — August 11, 1999 — Novell, Inc. today announced the availability of a new solution bundle for the education market. The bundle provides students with access to simple e-mail and fulfills faculty's requirements for full collaboration by combining Novell® GroupWise® and the Novell Internet Messaging System™ (NIMS). Leveraging Novell Directory Services® (NDS®), the bundle also provides administrators with a single point of management for both systems to simplify network management of end-users and resources.

Today's network solutions can be complex, expensive and challenging to manage. These messaging obstacles are particularly apparent to educational institutions, which service two very distinct groups. While faculty and staff often need extensive collaboration capabilities, like group scheduling and document management, students generally use only simple e-mail. For institutions to meet the messaging requirements of both groups, they currently install and administer two independent messaging systems, adding complexity and cost to network management. The Novell GroupWise-NIMS Bundle is a cost-effective solution to these challenges.

By implementing the extensive collaboration capabilities of GroupWise and the fast, simple e-mail offered by NIMS, educators gain a reliable, easy-to-use and highly scalable messaging infrastructure that meets the needs of both groups. And because both GroupWise and NIMS are based on NDS — the enterprise-proven platform that allows management of applications, information, profiles and digital identity — administrators can manage their entire network and all its resources from a single point, greatly simplifying network management.

"This bundle is a cost-effective solution that addresses both faculty and student needs," said Tom Rhoton, director of marketing for Novell. "It not only provides education customers with a comprehensive messaging and collaboration solution, its integration with NDS simplifies user management. If you think about the number of students and faculty members these institutions need to update and manage on these systems, the NDS integration is a major incentive to purchase this solution."

About Novell Internet Messaging System

Novell Internet Messaging System is a highly scalable, standards-based messaging server with an infrastructure design that provides maximum speed, reliability and performance. Some of the key benefits NIMS provides both end-users and network administrators are:

  • Ease of use — NIMS allows end-users to access multiple e-mail accounts (such as at work, home and school) via a single mailbox and update their passwords or settings without administrative support.
  • Manageability — Through integration with NDS, NIMS simplifies network management by automatically creating or deleting mailboxes each time user or resource information is updated in the NDS database. Also, because NIMS is based on open standards, administrators can manage users and systems via any Web browser.
  • Security — NIMS's robust security, based on NDS, is made possible by verification of identity and control of user access.
