NEC to Develop Caching Servers Based on Novell's Internet Caching System

Caching Appliances Based on NEC Express 5800 Series Address Internet Performance Issues

PROVO, Utah — September 10, 1999 — Novell, Inc. today announced that NEC Corporation will develop an Internet caching server product based on the Novell® Internet Caching System™. Under the agreement, NEC will add the caching offerings to the high performance NEC Express 5800 Series server product line. Initially available in Japan¹, shipments are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 1999.

NEC, the leader in Japanese PC market, is the first Japanese hardware vendor to become a Novell Internet Caching System partner. The caching appliance solutions based on the NEC Express 5800 Series will scale the Internet performance needs of small branch offices to the largest enterprises and Internet Service Provider (ISP) network operations centers.

Caching accelerates the performance of e-business Web servers, speeds information access across networks and lowers network telecommunication costs. Caching helps offset the impact of deteriorating server response from dramatic increases in Internet usage. It allows businesses to better manage information flows across their networks and increase network performance while lowering operating costs.

"As the demand for Web-based content increases, implementing caching at every Web server and major router segment will become necessary to maintain acceptable response times," said Ron Heinz, senior vice president, worldwide sales, Novell. "Caching appliances based on the Novell Internet Caching System provide the performance foundation necessary for the continued growth of e-business. We expect that NEC will be a major driver in the adoption and acceptance of Internet caching appliances."

About the Novell Internet Caching System

Announced in March, the Novell Internet Caching System is a scalable, plug-n-accelerate appliance architecture available for license by OEMs. Integration of a new high performance, scalable Cache Object Store (COS) with leading edge fault tolerance capabilities (Disk Cloning, Disk Mirroring, Cache Clustering) provides a solution that scales from small branch offices to the needs of global enterprises. This allows companies to optimize bandwidth, increase the capacity of Web servers and reduce telecommunication costs. Novell Internet Caching System enables content publishers, ISPs, and enterprises to expand their business across the Internet and drive new revenue opportunities. Novell Internet Caching System also provides a foundation for future services like DEN (Directory-Enabled Networks) enabled management and media streaming services.
