PROVO, Utah — September 13, 1999 — Novell, Inc., the world's leading provider of directory-enabled networking software and services, today announced the grand prize-winning applications for the Novell® Developers' Contest. The winners use Novell Directory Services® (NDS®) and NetWare® to create applications that help customers and users protect enterprise-computing systems and efficiently manage network resources. The judgment criteria were designed with the customer experience and benefits in mind. Applications were judged on ease of installation, usability, marketability, NDS enablement, use of NetWare 5 features, overall performance and quality. The winners are:

  • Commercial application: Enterprise Security Manager (ESM), a security management application from AXENT Technologies
  • Custom application: Collaborative Learning Environment, a set of directory-enabled, single sign-on network resources from Clemson University

Winners in the commercial category will receive consideration for up to $3 million in venture capital funding from Novell Ventures. Contest winners will exhibit their applications in the Novell Partner Pavilion (booth 4816) at NetWorld®+Interop in Atlanta Sept. 14-16.

"The contest was designed to act as a catalyst for the development of directory-enabled applications built on the NetWare platform and NDS," said David Fleck, vice president of Novell's Developer Relations. "Third-party developers creating NDS enabled applications benefit from increased market opportunities, a large installed base and reduced time to market. And customers directly benefit from applications powered by NDS, the only directory services proven to lower application cost of ownership and support costs."
