Novell Introduces Industry's First Directory-enabled NT Firewall

FireWALL for NT Designed for Small and Medium Sized Businesses

ATLANTA (NetWorld+Interop)—September 14, 1999—At the Networld+Interop trade show today, Novell, Inc. announced a new directory-enabled Internet security solution, the Novell® FireWALL for NT. The easy-to-use solution is the first firewall to integrate Internet security features with network bandwidth management tools to ensure that critical traffic receives priority during peak network usage. The Novell FireWALL for NT is designed for small and medium sized companies that are seeking a cost-effective means to simply and securely extend to the Web and enable e-Business.

Running on Windows NT servers, the Novell FireWALL for NT supports industry standards such as LDAP and works with the cross-platform Novell Directory Services® (NDS®) to provide businesses with a single point of management and control for Internet security. Novell is the Internet directory leader, with over 52 million users taking advantage of NDS today to manage all devices, people, policies and other resources on their network from a central location.

"We are making the Internet secure and manageable for small and medium sized businesses today, no matter which platforms they choose, while priming their networks for future expansion into Internet applications and e-commerce activities based on directory services," commented Smita Deshpande, Novell's director of Internet solutions. "The Novell FireWALL for NT will help customers bridge the gap between their businesses and the Internet, enabling them to simply and securely extend their networks to the Internet while preserving their existing investments."

TUV/Rheinland, a global engineering organization, has its largest U.S. office in Newtown, Connecticut. With 200 U.S. users accessing the Web via the Newtown office, IT Manager Frank Hoe appreciates the ease of use Novell Firewall for NT provides him. "Administering the Novell FireWALL for NT has been great because it uses the regular Windows interface that I'm already familiar with," said Mr. Hoe. "This product really helped us connect to the Internet without worrying too much about security issues."

Novell FireWALL for NT
The Novell FireWALL for NT is based on technology Novell obtained through its acquisition of Ukiah Software in June 1999, and is the first firewall to provide a comprehensive solution for both Internet security and quality of service bandwidth management. Year 2000 ready, the Novell FireWALL for NT supports LDAP, NT domains and NDS and includes these features:

  • Easy-to-use graphical user interface for all administration and management tasks.
  • Bandwidth traffic management: integrated with the firewall on a single server for lower costs, bandwidth management tools allow administrators to define which users have priority access to network bandwidth. This feature provides relief for performance problems during periods of high network traffic and is an economical alternative to costly network infrastructure hardware and telecommunication upgrades.
  • Policy-based security management: Security policies are most effective when easily defined and enforced. Integration with NDS and NT domains enable network administrators to implement security rules that are based on users and groups, rather than IP addresses.
  • Application Programming Interface support for industry standard security protocols: Novell FireWALL for NT supports the Content Vectoring Protocol and the Websense Open Server Platform, which enable integration with off-the-shelf third-party security products including authentication, virus scanning, URL filtering, and many other security applications available from a wide variety of vendors.

Novell FireWALL for NT and Novell BorderManager Enterprise Edition
The Novell FireWALL for NT is designed for small to medium sized businesses that need to simply and securely extend their business to the Internet in a cost-effective way. Novell's BorderManager® Internet security management suite includes strong authentication, VPN, user access control, firewall and caching services and is intended for businesses that require a broader range of integrated security services and have made a strategic commitment to NDS. Both security solutions can be used in heterogeneous environments and still be managed from a single point -with NDS- and fundamentally accelerate Novell's strategy as the Internet directory leader.
