Twentieth Century Fox Selects Novell's BorderManager Enterprise Edition to Link Global Operations over Internet

Virtual Private Network Uses Novell Directory Services for Internet E-mail and File Sharing Worldwide

PROVO, Utah — Sept. 28, 1999 — Novell, Inc. today announced that Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation is deploying the Novell® BorderManager™ Enterprise Edition suite in a Virtual Private Network (VPN) that securely links 34 offices worldwide over the Internet, including the Los Angeles headquarters and offices as widely located as London, Mexico City and Tokyo. Twentieth Century Fox estimates savings of more than $600,000 per year from the VPN, which enables Fox employees to exchange Novell's GroupWise® e-mail and share other data files over the Internet, thereby avoiding the substantially higher costs of leased digital lines or dial-up services.

Novell's BorderManager Enterprise Edition, including VPN services, enables Twentieth Century Fox to use industry-leading Novell Directory Services® (NDS®) to centrally manage secure access to customer, sales and other business information. The Novell Internet software runs on Novell NetWare® server platforms used to connect and manage network access for more than 5,000 PC users within Twentieth Century Fox worldwide. The VPN uses 128Kbps dedicated connections primarily attached to UUNET's Internet backbone.

"Novell's BorderManager VPN enables Twentieth Century Fox to extend our existing network infrastructure to the Internet and improve communication and collaboration throughout our worldwide organization at a fraction of the cost of leased lines or dial-up services," said Daniel Bittner, Fox's director of International Networks and Operations. "The directory-based Novell solution also provides us with a foundation for new Web-based services such as remote access for telecommuters and a company-wide intranet."

Twentieth Century Fox's international motion picture and home entertainment distribution divisions identified a need for global Internet access. "After we gathered all the business's requirements, a BorderManager solution was the obvious choice," said Mike DeBrincat, Fox's director of Infrastructure Architecture. Senior Network Designer Jennifer Alex and Senior Network Analyst Richard Tanaka deployed BorderManager in 14 key locations around the globe within four months.

According to DeBrincat, centralized management of Internet security and access through NDS contributes to the cost savings provided by the VPN solution. In addition, the underlying NDS and NetWare platform provides the reliability Twentieth Century Fox needs to support mission critical applications worldwide on a 24x7 basis.
