Novell Adds Muscle to Product Line with ScheMax 1.1 — a Directory Customization Tool

Novell's Acquisition of Netoria Results in Directory Solution That Helps Companies Customize NDS to Meet Specific Business Needs

PROVO, Utah — Sept. 29, 1999 — Novell, Inc. today announced the availability of ScheMax™ 1.1, a directory-based solution that easily extends the look, content and use of information in Novell® Directory Services® (NDS®). With ScheMax 1.1, companies can customize NDS to meet the needs of their business without relying on specialized programming skills, saving time and money.

ScheMax 1.1 is the first product to result from Novell's May 18, 1999, acquisition of Netoria, signifying the successful integration of an additional directory-based tool into Novell's product line. ScheMax 1.1 offers a simple, graphical way to customize NDS. NDS is the leading full-service directory software used to manage and control user access to applications and other resources on heterogeneous business networks and the Internet.

"ScheMax 1.1 has been a godsend for us. The simplified snap-in tools mean that non-programmers, like our student population, can easily update changes to their identification once we give them the rights," said Gary Porter, systems programmer for the University of Kentucky. "The impact on the IT support team has been incredible not just in terms of time savings, but also ease of use for our users."

ScheMax 1.1 uses the user identity information stored in NDS to allow network administrators to determine who has access to view and configure customized directory data — preserving the security and integrity of the data. Rights and tools can also be granted to individual users to update their information directly, reducing data-entry time. Since ScheMax 1.1 is configured with the familiar NWAdmin utility, network professionals need not spend time learning a new interface.

"ScheMax 1.1 is a clear example of how applications can leverage NDS to provide a customized directory solution to meet the specific needs of a business," said Patti Dock, vice president of product marketing for Novell. "The merging of our directory technology with Netoria's specialized solution serves as an excellent proof point of our commitment to provide customers with the tools they need to optimize productivity and their existing directory investments."

Customers who purchase ScheMax 1.1 will receive the tools required to view or edit NDS data and export it to another application, such as a spreadsheet for reporting. ScheMax 1.1 makes this possible using the industry standard Extensible Markup Language (XML). With ScheMax 1.1, companies will have the tools to extend their central repository in NDS to include all critical user and business information, such as security clearance, pager numbers and photographs to name a few.
